I love netflix, and I love instant streaming.

But there's a lot of crap on that site that isn't worth two minutes, so I wanted to do a thread dedicated to searching for hidden gems.

I mostly stream horror movies, and I have a soft spot for found footage, so if you don't like horror, scifi elements, or found footage, give these a miss.

V/H/S
V/H/S 2
The Bay
Devil's Pass
The Frankenstein Theory
Apollo 18
Atrocious (Spanish-language movie)
Trollhunter

Horror/Comedy

Severence
Grabbers
The stuff
Cabin in the Woods
Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil

Thrillers

Hell (French-language movie)
Citadel
The Exam (the only movie on this list which isn't really a horror movie)

Vampire movies

Let the Right One in (Swedish-language movie)
Stake Land

Historical fiction horror

The black Death

Some of these cleverly defy their genre, some are just well made for independant movies, and some are just well made.

Does anyone else have gems that they found in Netflix instant? Maybe some that aren't horror movies.

Loving Strangers.

NetFlix gives you a great selection from around the world. Unfortunately, I only understand English.

I usually watch TV series that I either didn't have time to watch when they were originally aired or didn't even know about.

There is one little gem, a bit campy and may not be to many peoples tastes, that I found hilarious.

God Bless America

Another series of made for TV movies I found...never saw them when they originally aired, are the Jesse Stone movies that Tom Selleck made. Netflix only has a few of them.

In the order you should watch:

Night Passage
Stone Cold
Death in Paradise
Sea Change

There are four more, but as of yet Netflix hasn't obtained the rights to air them.

Thin Ice
No Remorse
Innocents Lost
Benefit of The Doubt

All are well done and are adapted from Robert B Parker's series of books.

Netflix horror

I have recently watched the following streaming movies from NetFlix:

The Cabin in the Woods - satire horror, interesting. Three stars

They - sucked.

Apartment 143 - sort of the found footage genre. Several good gotchas in it. Four stars

House at the End of the Street - rather ho-hum, wouldn't call it a horror movie, maybe in the suspense/thriller category three and a half stars

Session 9 - one of those movies that leaves you wigged out for a few days 4 1/2 stars

Absentia - indie film. Much better than 'They' 3 1/2 stars

If you are 'The Shining' Fan, the documentary Room 237 is interesting. I found it to be about 30 min too long and teetering into the crackpot conspiracy theory stuff (faked moon landing) but the "errors" pointed out were rather interesting.

Oh, and whatever you may be drinking or otherwise altering your mind, don't, I repeat, DON'T select 'Nude Nuns With Big Guns' there isn't even a humor value to it.

I enjoyed God Bless America. That one exceeded my expectations.

Some others I recently watched and enjoyed include:

Super

The Details

The Brass Teapot

Safety Not Guaranteed

Butter

Iron Sky

None are great, but all are watchable. Iron Sky is probably the campiest movie ever, totally absurd, but still entertaining. Super was very good, but the first half hour is agonizingly slow. Just stick with it for a little bit; the last 2/3 is very worthwhile.

Safety Not Guaranteed is a pleasant surprise of a movie, I thought.

Iron Sky was... well, different. Still not entirely sure what I thought of it, although generally my feeling was positive. Hilarious in places, campy in others, both in some and in the remaining scenes... hard to describe.

Also loved Cabin in the Woods, although I'm always on board for a Joss Whedon movie so I'm predisposed to like them.

In what world does someone rate Session 9 over Cabin in the woods?

Matter of opinion, I guess.

One that I forgot. Robot and Frank. Not a horror movie. It's really well done science fiction. About an old man who has mild dementia (or Alzheimer's, not quite sure) and his son buys him a robot designed to take care of elderly people. The robot was not programmed to follow laws, but to do everything it can to keep Frank lucid, so they end up performing Frank's old job to help him remember.

And his old job is burgling houses. :D

I go into many movies not having any background or know what to expect. My daughter has just recently gotten bitten by the scary movie bug. Her boyfriend doesn't like to watch them so in addition to teaching her some of the original classics (Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Psycho, Poltergeist, The Shining, and other King novels made movies) we will spend an evening watching a thriller/suspense/horror on Netflix. I was expecting to be scared while watching The Cabin In The Woods. I did more laughing. Now that I have read more about it, I understand a little more about what was being done. It wasn't a bad movie, just not what I was looking for at the time.

We have been on a bit of a movie binge in our household. Here are a few more titles and recommendations:

Numbers Station - Decent low-budget action movie. *** (out of 5)

The Perfect Host - Weird, weird, weird--and hilarious. Couldn't turn away once it got going. If you like demented, strange, twisted comedy, this one is for you. ****

Beautiful Creatures - Well worn premise, but has some good performances and a fair amount of laughs. Just don't mind the plot holes, they're everywhere. ***

The Vicious Kind - I don't know why this one is listed as a comedy, there is nothing funny about it. Still, a very good but twisted family drama. Adam Scott is at his best; Brittany Snow is wonderful. Caution--starts VERY slow. ***

Erased - Decent action movie, but nothing original. Basically, it's Taken, Bourne, and Hannah, but kind of a light version of all three. **1/2

It's a Disaster - Ultra low budget, quirky, and at times funny end of the world comedy. David Cross and Julia Stiles are great, the rest of the cast of unknowns (and America Ferrera) is competent. Lit. plot bunnies abound! ***

I'm not listing the ones that stunk up the joint.

Starting tomorrow...

MOBILE, Ala. - More than 80 movies and a handful of TV shows will no longer be available for streaming through Netflix, starting tomorrow.

The company's DVD customers can still order the shows in the mail. A representative for Netflix says the company adds and deletes titles from its streaming service due to licensing contracts for exclusive content. The list of streaming movies due to expire includes favorites like: "Titanic", "Top Gun", "Braveheart," "Do the Right Thing," "Roman Holiday," "Platoon" and "War Games."

The list of streaming movies due to expire includes such favorites as “Being John Malkovich,” “Braveheart,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Flashdance.”

Here's a series I forgot to mention. It was hilarious the first time around, and it's just as good the second time. If you liked "Arrested Development," you'll love "Better Off Ted."

The black Death

Some of these cleverly defy their genre, some are just well made for independant movies, and some are just well made.

Does anyone else have gems that they found in Netflix instant? Maybe some that aren't horror movies.

The Black Death was a movie that built up to nothing. Not truly bad, but the buildup was more than the ending. Kinda wasted Sean Bean's talents. Though I guess if he found time to make Silent Hill: Revelations, he doesn't worry much about how his talent is spent.

Apollo 18 wasn't much either. Not truly bad again, but it built and delivered like a sci-fi Blair Witch.

Tucker and Dale versus evil; so long as you're not expecting a serious attempt in horror in contrast to comedy, this one truly was a gem.

Stake Land was good as well, though the comparisons I've heard to Zombieland were nearly absurd. Entirely different mood and delivery, plus it had true references to societal strife, though not in a realistic setting of course.

If anyone hasn't seen the original Outpost (2007) and is partial or neutral to zombie flicks, I'd recommend it. The second wasn't bad if I recall either. Third... well, two outta three isn't so bad.

And Branded (can't remember which year) was decent, though not what I expected. If you decide to look for this one, it has Leilee Sobieski in it. Not sure if i spelled her name right or not.

Cabin in the Woods; not sure how Whedon got a mass release on this one when Serenity seemed to move under radar and was far better (from the perspective of someone who'd never seen Firefly).

They just put up 'Attack on Titan' Possibly one of the darkest and best shounen animes ever.

If you don't like anime, watch 'AoT', It's the anime for people who do not like anime.

Not sure what netflix carries, but if your into Anime and haven't watched Elfin Lied, give it a try. I'm not much for Animated anything, but this was excellent. Fair warning, it was a series, not a movie.

Before I got sick, I didn't really watch television at all and only rare movies. With so much time on my hands, I've been devouring everything I've missed in the last couple of decades. (Wife ordered Netflix to keep me away from her TV, I think). Lately, I've been watching;

Lost Girl - Succubus for main protagonist. 'nuff said.

Continuum - Thrown back in time and wants to get back to her child.

Surface - Discovered a new lifeform under the ocean. Only it's hungry and there's a lot of them

Arrow - Based on "Green Arrow" from DC. Vigilante armed with (wait for it) bow and arrow.

and

Firefly - Joss Whedon's most brilliant creation to date, in my humble opinion

I loved Tom Selleck in these! Great picks.

Orange is the New Black - women's prison drama series. Need I say more? :D

I no longer have my copy of the original The Monster That Devoured Cleveland. If anyone runs across a copy, I would appreciate a heads up. (Just the scene where the monster rapes a passenger train is unforgettable.)

Just watched the first two seasons of American Horror Story, liked both stories, Murder House and Asylum, the latter being the better. I'm looking forward to season three with Coven since being from the NO area.

I like the premise of American Horror Story, one story for a full season then a new story for the following season. Jessica Lange is awesome as are all the regular actors. Highly recommend if you like horror/supernatural.

I don't know if you can get t on NetFlicks, but try The Night of the Hunter- creepy performance by Robert Mitchum

No Time for Sergeants - Andy Griffith is funnier than hell with Nick Adams.

And if anyone hasn't seen Its A Mad Mad Mad Mad World - Priceless performance by Spencer Tracy and almost every comedian on earth.
