Hiccups... how do YOU stop them?

Not only do the holidays bring hangovers for some of us, I have found many times people experience the dreaded case of the hiccups! Most of the cures I was taught as a youngster do NOT work for me now.

The most effective cure for me has been the bartenders' "cure" of biting into a lemon wedge soaked in bitters and sprinkled with sugar. Very often stops mine with one bite. Any more suggestions out there?

Pant like a dog......gets everything back in time. Look at my AV, would I lie!

Get somebody to hold your ears really tight while you drink a pint of water.

BTW, if you ever need to sneeze, look directly at the light (not the Sun, silly!) or tickle a matchstick in your nostril.

Hey Fuzzy!

Oh.. and as to hiccups.. I have a cure, but I've yet to get another person to try it.

This is an explanation for those who don't know what causes hiccups, if you do know, just skip this paragraph. Hiccups are caused by a twitching of the diaphragm, the muscle that controls your breathing.

So, when I get a nasty case of the hiccups (And for me, hiccups hurt, a LOT!) I exhale as much as I can, and then give my diaphragm muscle a shock. That usually stops the hiccups. Problem is, the only way I've found to give it a significant shock is to punch one's self in the stomach. That's why no one is willing to try it.

My dad swore by the pickle juice hiccup cure.. He always told us kids.. and my kids.. to drink dill pickle juice. My kids do it.. I do it.. my dad did it.. works everytime.. Not sure what it is that does it. The sourness.. the nasty taste..or what *L* but I know it does work..

OUCH.......next time try the panting......same effect one hell of alot less pain!

Hold your nose and drink a few big gulps of water, if it doesn't work the first time that means you did something wrong because it always works so just try again.

:D

I found that if I just supress the hiccups and breathe slowly for thirty or fourty seconds, they stop permanently. Sometimes I have to do it longer. I don't know if everyone can exercise this degree of control--but I suspect that if you do a fair bit of swimming or singing you probably already have to required degree of control. Certainly, I'm no yogi.

Surely, I'm not the only one?

Seems like the breath control method is most popular here. I'm not always successful with that one, and like Moridin, they hurt a LOT! But so would that punch in the stomach!

Does anyone find that once you get them, hiccups return a few hours later?
