In his early years Ed had been an Indy Race Car driver. He was most proud of having served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Serving as a Marine throughout II, Korea, and 'nam is very, very, very impressive, but being an Indy roadster driver back in the day and living to talk about it...

BTW: that photo is his official qualifying photo after he qualified for his 3rd - and last - Indianapolis 500...

...last because before the 1957 race was green-flagged, another driver crashed into Russo and sent him flying into the outside wall.

He ended-up with broken ribs, a ruptured spleen, and an eye injury among other boo-boos...

...and as far as I understand, he never got back into a race car again.
