VERY good I like them :) You have good shadow work on the facial features and your backgrounds to not deter from the subject. Your proportions work well. :D

Good work dude!

I've been drawing/painting for around eight years now. I've sold a few landscapes and pet portraits using soft pastel, and one or two using oils, but I'm trying to get into human portraits.

I've succesfully drawn a few with pencil and pastel (in different shades of one colour) but I'd appreciate any tips on what oil cplour to use for human portraits.

I'm seriously thinking of opening a shop where I live, doing portraits from photographs. Do you think it's worth a shot? I get a lot of good feedback from people that have seen my work but I still have doubts.

Does anyone know of people who make a 'decent' living from this? I can do an oil painting of a pet - on board - at a rate of one-per-day.

OH I don't know!

Hey Brushstroke, what a great name for an artist.

I paint a lot, and have just gone 'pro', but am unable to do it full time. I am trying to make use of the 12 years of painting skills I have, and am quite into it.

Okay, a few things....

I don't oil paint, but I figure I will start once I get the money for supplies, and also clean up my wood shop to build my own canvases, which is really easy to do, if you have the space, and the supplies. I'll buy a bolt of duck cloth and the wood, and a big ass can of Geso, and go at it, but again, money is not there for it right now.

I do know that in Acrylic, that using a totally Green base in the areas the flesh will be, helps to neutralize the pinks and reds in certain 'flesh' hues used. It also creates for a sort of depth that helps give more realism to the work. Else it would look cartoonish.

Oil hues may work similarly, but you have to onspot blend them, or else you'd have to wait a long time for the green to dry, before you could paint over it.

Just remember what shade of grey/brown each set of complimentary colors make when blended and then you can build up value using those blends to create depth in a human face.

There are some amazing artists, that give advice or have already covered topics of interest to learners. I like this site, but have yet to post there. My website is down till Friday for upgrades, and then I may add in some of my stuff, but I read here a bit because they give great tips about marketing your work to those who want to go pro.

They didn't make up the saying "starving artist" for no reason :)

It has taken me many years to build my art to where I make a living from it. BUT to do that I had to build in my writing with it all. Just selling the art work would not be enough. I write books about art.. freelance for art based magazines... tutor people on how to do my style of art (not painting). The money I make from doing private commisions is good, but not enough to pay the morgage and feed two kids etc, so I brought in other things that are art related that keep my soul alive......

And I was afraid things would have changed

I've been absent from the board for most of the last 4 weeks, but I see Ya Yada is still around. What a relief.

But of course:)but of everyone, yes:) especially children? They are so clear and big:)

nice:)

thanks for sharing CH those are great, they both seem to have alot of humour in the facial expression, a warmth that you've captured well imho:)

Yes please share with us brushstroke:)
i like your business idea, but would reccomend trying your local colleges and such, looking for art tutor positions and if you're not shy, modelling for life drawing classes pays quite well compared to waitressing over here:)

or maybe a combination of web based business, with print advertising..where you go to the comissioner?
cuts down on establishment costs, then get a shop once established slightly? just an idea.

Those are wonderful paintings. You have talent and should be proud of it.

My brother is the artist in my family and one day soon I hope I may be able to post one of his works.

Thank you for sharing with us.

Artwork

Hello All.

Appologies for not responding sooner. (Computer problems.)

I'd love to share some of my work with you. I've just got my brother to scan some of my pictures into his computer and e-mail them to me. I've saved them into 'my documents', but can anyone please tell me how to upload them here?

I'm afraid I'll need step-by-step instructions. (or a link that explains everything.)

Much appreciate any help!

Cheers.

Brushstroke.
