Essentially, that was a question I posed to Dolf. I have seen some pretty raucous videos of demonstrations there but nothing like what the Irish put on some years back.

The "protests" over asylum seekers aren't organised political movements. They're the equivalent of football hooligans blowing off steam. To give you an idea of the type, police revealed that 2/5 of those arrested at the protests in the summer had previously been reported for domestic violence. The asylum hotels are generally in places of severe social deprivation, high unemployment, high crime, high drug, low education. People are having a beer, throwing a brick, painting a flag, and then sleeping it off. A considerable number of these people won't even vote. They're fed up of being poor and poorly served, so they find a focal point for their anger and yell until they feel better.

For contrast, a new leftwing party was created, and in only the first 24 hours they had more sign ups than reform has members. There's a growing dissatisfaction, but it's a very British dissatisfaction. I almost wish it was a bit more exexciting. People want out of the status quo, but not in an organised insurrection kind of way.
