For those of you who spend most of your time posting on the HT Board and Cafe:

When it comes to giving advice, do you have, in your opinion, an area (or areas) of expertise? What do you consider your area(s) of expertise to be?

Thanks in advance for your responses! :)

My areas of expertise are few and far between. The subjects I feel I have any in depth knowledge of are Dungeons & Dragons (now out of date), Magic:The Gathering (also out of date), certain video games, and a beginner to intermediate knowledge of 3D modeling. There may be more, but I can't think of anything right off hand.

I have no expertise. Some advice that I give is based on personal experience, some based on observing and listening to other people, and some just based on whatever my gut tells me. I think it's fair to say that I learn from my mistakes and successes, and make an effort to understand the underlying reasons. I try to pass along what I've learned, but calling what I write expertise seems arrogant.

The only thing I have expertise is breathing. The rest is a crap shoot.

I tend to reply only when I have some experience with the topic or if it is more open then I give the topic thought. Lately my mind hasn't been in the best place for good thinking, so I keep out of threads.

I seem to be a jack of all trades, master of none as far as How To advice goes. I have more experience for my own good sometimes, or more knowledge then what I know what to do with.
Depending on the topic, I usually have a good mouthful to say. But since I'm no master, I get stumped just like the rest of ya'll.

I really don't have an area of expertise but I have alot of opinions! I think any advice I give comes from personal experiences.

typo-fu master and i appear to share a fondness for RPGs. typo fu master, do you frequent the webRPG forums?

i consider my areas of expertise bras, most political matters and comparative theology. i've worked in the publishing industry (i don't have any useful contacts, so let me save you the trouble right there), and know an unusual amount about some literary forms.

You know, I'm not sure I have any expertise, per se. I've had varied experiences and I advise people on things I know something about. If the topic is something I know nothing about (pegging, for example), I don't offer advice.

i'm sort of like bluesugar here... i have a huge breadth of knowledge that is somewhat shallow (though you'll never hear me admit that). i just know a little bit about a LOT of stuff.

i think that the things i tend to display the most here at HT (proper and cafe) lean toward the sarcastic, cynical, ribbing sort of thing. unless a thread is clearly a heavy, serious issue i'll usually go for the gag... sometimes it works and others it doesn't.

if a thread is one of true significance i always do my best to respond in a feeling, empathetic way first... and if i can, i'll throw some things out to think about or maybe even a specific course of action to consider. the way i figure it, if you can't contribute something constructive to someone who has a genuine problem then you should just keep your trap shut... you're either part of the problem or part of the solution, right?

there are SOME instances where i have direct, personal experience on things. usually it depends on my mood and what i can recall at a given moment. if you catch me in the right frame of mind and with the right topic i can provide a lot of insight and you can bet it'll be dead-on balls accurate (as said in "my cousin vinny").

i'm the kind of person who absorbs just about everything aural and visual throughout my day and i seldom forget anything. i guess that kind of makes me a good resource for a lot of things... only problem is that i'm HIGHLY analytical so i'm constantly sifting through my thoughts, creating connections, breaking them down, sorting them out, formulating other thoughts around them... sort of an internal philosophy/analysis is always going on in my head. in fact, as i type this, my eye is sort of mapping the nanna bouncing around in my peripheral vision and the pussy cat blinking and growling beneath it... there's a pattern there somewhere.

ok... i shut up now.

It's my knowledge of those games, not the games themselves that's out of date. If I had the opportunity I'd still be interested in D&D. As for Magic, I had 6 2 foot by 2 foot boxes full of cards which got left behind 2 moves ago. :( It's been several years since I've played either.

Back on topic: I have a basic idea of how to use a few image manipulation apps.

Sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll... *gives the "horned god salute"*...

Seriously... My interests are quite eclectic so, I know a little about a lot of things.

But, sex would be number one.

What can I say? I'm a perv... ;)

I don't give advice much at all, though I have sometimes rambled on a bit about subjects where I have had some experience. My contributions, on balance, have tended toward the lighter side. The one exception to this has been Cathleen's "Defining Love" thread because this is a subject I enjoy discussing (some say I worry it like a cat worries a mouse, but that's another story).

I don't claim to be an expert at anything, but I have a good ear to listen and a willingness to help if I can. And, like Yank, I appreciate the humor in life.

Ouch, that would mean self praise.
I have personal experience with depression and that is where I draw most of my information on that topic from.

I have had personal experiences with sexually abused people.

I have spent many many years studying sexuality and relationships.

I am an eclectic collector of information and enjoy the challenge of tracking down answers to something I don't know.

Mostly any suggestions or observations I may make are based on personal experience and I try not to tell people "this is what you must do" or "this is how it is". I find that kind of "advice?" condescending, insensitive and extremelely unintelligent. I try to offer the best advice I can based on the information given, I have no right to tell someone else how to think or live their life.

I have no formal qualifications, however I am an expert in my lifes experiences.

Try counting tongue to dance ratios (I got a headache now)

This is what you MUST do: you MUST continue to give this type of advice. :p

I didn't mean for this thread to be a horn-tootin' bragfest. I suppose, though, since I started it, I should contribute.

Despite the condescending overtones of some of my posts, I'm a jack(jill?) of some trades, master of none. The advice I give generally comes from my life experiences. I've been pregnant a time or two (or four), so I can sometimes offer insights when pregnancy-related threads pop up, but I'm always going to point out that I'm not a medical professional, nor have I ever played one on TV.

That's about all I can think of for now.

You are right, but it always leaves me wondering, french braid or standard plait?

this is the DUMBEST question i've ever heard!

EVERYONE knows... standard plait for headaches, french braid for indigestion. it's as common a phrase as "feed a cold, starve a fever" (or however that goes).

Do I have experience? No.
A great deal of wisdom? No.
An extensive amount of education? No.

But, I can BS advice/opinions like nobodies business. :D

My field of experience includudes everything and anything you can think of plus 20 things you cant think of :p

although im not entierly a solid regular to posting, but my expertise tends to vary from field to field depending. i can tell you alot about depression, suicide (ways to get out of it), rape, and certian specific laws about rape and stutory rape.

my Real expertise is in Guns... :p but no one asks here.

everything else i have just a general to simple knowledge of. (including chaos physics and advanced pelotelemorphic theroies)
