Ok... I need some more specificity. Was it that you didn't like the movie, or that it was actually bad? I ask because 1) It is an opera, 2) the opera was insanely popular in its day, 3) Tim Burton, 4) The story is notoriously grotesque, 5) Tim Burton, 6) it has received critical acclaim from just about everyone.
Please let me know more about your feelings, without any spoilers... I've not seen it yet.
okay, here we go. I think it got critical acclaim because it was daring but I just don't think it translated well to the big screen. maybe I just wasn't in the mood ... I dunno.
I love Tim Burton, Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp...
the makeup and sets were very Burtonesque, as was the lighting, etc. I think it was just the storyline ...
it's movin' along, movin' along - perhaps a bit slow and then when it picked up in the middle it was good, but IMHO it, ummmm, ended a bit too quickly and we were left with a kind of - "oh. it's over. ok then." feeling.
I could give much more detail about what I liked versus didn't but cannot do so here without giving away the surprise elements.
There is one scene in particular that should have ended differently to stay true to Depp's character.
but what do I know. i'm not a movie critic!
edited to add: I think I would haved loved it in the theatre...
