The relief and happiness sparkling in Mona's eyes was evident. "Of course. He talks about you all the time. I've been really curious to meet you."
She stepped, lightfooted, inside. "I know it seems weird to just call over like this..." she said, a little vaguely.
"Carol," Josh said to his stepmother, his tone coldly indifferent. She had Allie's large brown eyes, but where Allie's were soft and doe-like, Carol's were glazed and hard.
He turned back to his father.
"Last night, you broke Allie's laptop and her phone. I estimate you owe her $600."
Josh Sr. sneered at him. "So what if I did? The little slut's going to college, isn't she? She thinks she's better than us. If you're so concerned about her, you can pay for them."
Josh took a step closer, the light of battle in his eyes. "I'm not telling you again," he said softly.
