Help with characterization-- how would you react?

I'm writing a sory and I think I've overthunk a certain part to the point where I don't know how my character would react anymore. So I'm asking for your help, just tell me how you would react in the following situation and I'll try to figure it out from there.

You're with someone you've been persuing for a long time, and all the while he/she has been somewhat resitant to your advances while leading you on at the same time. You've finally got this person in bed with you, and he/she is trying to keep you from lifting up his/her shirt, but in the heat of the moment, this person forgets his/her reservations and you manage to slip the shirt over his/her head and suddenly you notice scars covering this person's stomach, chest, and arms. The scars are in various stages of healing--some are practically faded while others are fresh and covered in scabs. They are obviously self-inflicted. In the past few weeks you've grown to care about this person and he/she is obviously very nervous about you discovering this secret. So... what now?

Thanks for your help.

Well, I'm not sure what you are looking for...for me my characters talk to me in my head, and if I try to go off in a direction they don't want to go, the story stops.

I would re-examine how you got to the point where you are at, and see if that is the direction that your characters really want you to take.

Why are the wounds obviously self inflicted?

Well, how I would react is not necessarily how your character would react. You've overthunk (grin) it, yes, but you need to probably leave it and go away for a bit and... surprise, surprise... think about it more.

There are people who'd be shocked, who'd sympathise, sit back and ask what's going on, be surprised, get up and walk away, cry, stop whatever they're doing and stare... there's just no end to what could happen. You just need to figure out what your character would do. You say your character has a bit of feeling for her, so I say he'd be okay with it.

Me? I'd just probably trail and finger over them and kiss them. My scars are precious to me.

I can't say, I'm not your character.

Go have a talk with them, they'll let you know.

You might want to go over to the Story Discussion Board and look at the piece posted by Varian to see how a character acts when he discovers a potential lover's secret:

If you want the meat, just skip down to the second part.

Personally, my reaction would be shock and a kind of visceral horror, the kind you feel whenever you see someone's terrible scars. I know about cutters, though, and I know what those scars mean, so my second reaction would be deep concern. I'd feel for her, but I'd also be wondering what I was getting into. Obviously she's someone with emotional issues. Is quick sex what she really wants?

A lot of my reaction would probably be determined by her own response to my discovery. She might be ashamed, or contrite, or maybe even defiant--like "this is who I am." I seriously doubt that I'd just carry on though. I mean, we'd need to talk.

I have to say that this has been done in a lot of great movies, and in itself, has no originality. The "discovery" is not the interesting thing about this story. I'd suggest concentrating on your own attitudes to the woman until you feel that your own understanding or empathy is worth elucidating in print.

I didn't see it done in "March of the Penguins" and I watched it twice. Once in French.

I never saw that. Was it good?

I'm thinking of Dans Ma Peau (In My Skin), Painful Secrets (Norma Bailey).

Polanski did it, (first?) in "Repulsion".
