Help with animation maker?

Perhaps this should be on the GB, but it scares me.

Does anyone know where I might find a free or cheap program that allows you to create your own animated movies and characters, such as non-human characters? This is not for me, it's for my son. We've been looking on and off all day but not quite finding what he wants. I realize what we want may not be there, or be cheap, or whatever, but any help would be appreciated.

We've looked at things like Moviestorm and GoAnimate but it's not what he wants. (It never is )

Ah, thanks. Good idea. I keep to about three areas on this forum and tend to forget about the others.
