Help With a Story

I'm writing a story, and hope that some of you might help me make it more realistic. The first story I posted on Lit includes a scene where the narrator is punished with a spanking. His master pulls him across his lap and administers ten strokes to his bare bottom with a strap. I'm writing the sequel now, which begins with him waking up the next morning. Unfortunately, I have never experienced a spanking, so I'm not certain how he might feel.

Would there be any physical signs of the punishment (bruises or welts), and if so, what might they be?
What would my narrator feel as he moved? If there are sensations, are they more burning or aching?
How uncomfortable would he be sitting on a hard stool? Would it be more occasional squirming or a strong desire to stay standing instead? Would it get worse over time?
What would he feel when his bottom is squeezed or rubbed? What would make it feel better or worse?

It works better for the story if there are physical signs and feelings that remind him of the night before, so please assume the worst: a strong master, a heavy hand, and a thin strap. On the other hand, I want it to be realistic. If he wouldn't feel anything the next morning, I shouldn't include it in the story.

This isn't a BDSM sort of a story, but you seemed like the best group for first hand information. I hope that this is the right place to post this, and would appreciate any insight you can give me.

My opinion is that unless the "master" was trying to damage his property, there would not be that much physical sign of the incident, at most, a few welts.

The man might not enjoy sitting. It might sting, be sore and/or burn but within 24-48 hours all traces would likely be gone unless a bone was impacted or blood was drawn.

In fact, it is historical fiction, set in ancient Rome with a true master/slave relationship. I don't consider it to be BDSM because it's not very consensual.

I appreciate the comments. A few welts and some pain on sitting are just what I need to give this story flavor.
