Besides cost what is the difference between a flatpanal CRT monitor and a LCD flatscreen. I was told by my doctor to get one and due to cost have been looking on ebay. I have no clue what is what.

Thanks

flat panel is more realistic...better detail...less eyestrain...and of course...more $$$

No, a flatscreen LCD is more expensive than a flatpanel CRT monitor.

A flatscreen LCD is (more or less) like a hand calculator screen - soft like that. If you press on the screen, you can see the colors run. They are AWESOME for quality, however, and take up less room than a CRT monitor.

A flatpanel CRT monitor is similar to most other monitors, but the screen does not have the curve to it so it has more viewable area than a normal one.

See I have to get because I am photo sensitive and when I chat I tend to have seizures but I need a outlet because I cant drive anywhere. Well the one, umm CRT I guess is better for my seizures but I just didn't know if it was a big difference or not. The cost is very high. Just wondering Thanks guys.

The chances are that the monitor that you have now is a CRT monitor, just not flat. I would think that the LCD would have less flicker, but I'm not really sure.

Actually Raw, you have it kind of backwards, as did the original question. but the rest of your explanation was correct:

"Flatpanel" monitors as they are often called, are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). LCDs are what you typically see on laptops and other devices. They are called "flatpanel" because they don't have the huge tube out the back like CRTs, and are therefore just a relatively flat panel (4"-8" vs. 15"-20"). LCD Flatpanels have the following advantages and disadvantages:

They are relatively instant on devices compared to CRTs. They consume much less power, radiate less heat (and EMI), are much smaller in depth and lighter. For the same size (width and height) they typically have more viewable area; when they say they are a 17" display, they mean 17", not 16" or less as with a CRT. LCDs are brighter and have more contrast than CRTs, but can be somewhat washed out by sun (if you are buying a laptop and may use it outside, take it out in the sun and see how it looks - not all LCDs are created equally). LCDs have less glare than CRTs.

They don't have as much resolution as some CRTs, but they are catching up; I can get a 21" CRT that has 1600x1200 resolution (or more), but I don't know of any comparable LCDs that have that kind of resolution. Probably in a year or two. Their viewing angle (being able to view from the side) is less than a CRT, and they probably don't handle motion (as in video) as well as a CRT; they tend to smear video - although the newer ones are getting better at this - if you play action games or video on your computer check out the LCD you are considering in this mode before buying one.

LCDs are also typically more expensive than CRTs, in part due to the fact that the manufacturers are still working on getting yields up and expense down. But they are already well below what CRTs used to cost, and CRT cost is coming down because they are being phased out.

"Flatscreen" monitors are CRTs. This terminology is a bit of marketing speak used to advertise that the front surface of the CRT is relatively flat. The flatter the better as that means less distortion.

My understanding is that LCD screens have much less flicker and are much better for people who suffer from photosensitive seizures. You can check that out online by doing a search on "LCD seizure".

Thank you that helps. I was going by what my Nero said and when I went online to look up prices I was confused buy the two.
