Are 50 caliber rounds even legal to possess? Isn't that the ammo they use in the big tripod-mounted machine guns?
Not illegal and probably not the same round.
But when you start cleaning out a stores inventory...
Buying a few hundred rounds of .223 or 5.56mm not much attention.
A few thousand rounds and ...
.50 BMG is illegal here in Ca to possess. Apparently our legislators were concerned that someone could reach out and touch them from a mile away so they wrote a law banning that specific caliber - .50 BMG. Which is fine, there's always .50 Beowolf and a few others.
Barrett got so pissed at what the legislators did, he has refused to service or sell rifles/parts to any California law enforcement department ever since. Apparently the State DOJ had more than a few which are now inop because they need parts/serviced. Other law enforcement depts are in the same boat - lots of very expensive paperweights.
As for cleaning out a store's inventory, many people buy ammo in bulk lots per caliber. Nothing wrong with that. Nor does it indicate any criminal endeavor or plan.
It is only the ill informed and/or self delusioned who believe otherwise.
