Help Desperately Needed for Animal Victims of Hurricane Katrina.

I just wanted to say that this thread totally restored my faith in humanity. All we've been hearing over here are stories of armed looters, racism, Bush being a prick and men fighting over the aid supplies to the detriment of woman and old people.

It's nice to hear that people have remembered the animals and are making a real effort not to make it too traumatic on them. :rose:

Thank you, Carson :) I'm excited for you about the dog you're going to adopt! I did the Blind Adoption thing with my dog. The pound called one day, gave a very basic description, and I agreed to have him. It was the best move of my life, because he turned into my best buddy ever. :rose:

carson, does your contact know about EARS? Or is she from that organization?

PM coming soon--I'm waiting for a callback from a friend who works at a local vet hospital/kennel.
I think your AV is considered animal cruelty.

I'm saying "fostering" instead of adopting cause I'm still naive enough to hope it isn't permanent....

You never know - in a couple of months you might find yourself hoping the opposite :rose:

Thanks Carson.

Here's another way to help. I heard about this organization on NPR today. They're a New York State animal rescue/adoption group who've been authorized by FEMA to collect abandoned and lost pets in the hurricane area. They did the same thing in Florida last year. They search and rescue, provide medical treatment, and find housing for dogs and cats whose owners haven't been located. FEMA has learned that these rescues are necessary for the safety of the human population, as well as out of compassion for the animals.

Be careful when approaching or handling a dog or cat that's injured, starving or in shock. Reports of dog bites went up by more than 200 percent after the Florida hurricanes last year, and the incidence of rabies was high among pets that had been competing with wild animals for food and shelter. I can hug injured dogs and get away with it, but that's because they recognize a well-meaning bitch when they see one.

Edited to add:

If you're an animal lover and you don't want to be bullied into adopting a shelter animal (adopting a local one could make room for one from the Katrina zone) or making a donation, don't look at the attachment. Whatever you do.

Carson -

We emailed her but haven't heard back yet.

Is it better to call?

Sarah, I e-mailed her too. I can't adopt an animal, but I can get the word out to every local vet hospital and boarding kennel in NE Ohio, plus a friend is a member of the board of the local Humane Society. The response e-mail says not to call. I'll PM it to you.

Check your junk mail folder, too--that's where mine wound up.

Thank you!

On my way -

I finally heard back this morning. Ditto what Jammies said. They are also accepting donations. This shelter isn't far from here.

Jackson, Mississippi. Anyone who's close....

Shereads, thank you for the pictures. I want to take in every single one of these dogs but if I have more than one more, I'll need a city kennel license

My boyfriend isn't very approving of all this, but two of our dogs we have now are strays he brought home, so I know he understands my need to do this.

Thank You to everybody who's helped!!! you are all wonderful and I knew I could find some people here who had hearts big enough for these pets.

Another good resource for anyone who wants to help and isn't sure whether to do it with a donation of time or money, or by fostering or adopting an animal:

Craigs List is an online community with everything from personal ads to stuff that's for sale. It's too huge for my taste, but my friend C told me they have a lot of useful message boards related to Hurricane Katrina. I found a page of pet-related message boards last night but forgot to bookmark it. If you're interested, start searching here at their Katrina home page:

Another bright spot - petfinder.org. They're a group that normally offers an online searchable database to help people find pets to adopt. They've established a site to reunite pets with their owners, and, in the interview they just had on MSNBC, they said that some pet shelters have been set up in Louisiana and Mississippi. Rescue workers have been able to get to the hardest hit places in both states.

Happy dogs, happy kitties.

And hamsters. Don't forget hamsters.

:catroar:

I found a message at Craigs List from a family who are willing to foster one or two hamsters or gerbils.

Well hell. I've finally seen the thing that pushed me into the No-TV Zone: dogs stranded in the tops of trees, a dozen feet or so above the receding water. Too frightened or too weak to respond to calls from rescuers. And the rescuers can't take the time to bring one reluctant animal down from a tree when so many others are still alive and waiting.

I'm reluctant to foster a dog without knowing it would get along with my 13-year-old spaniel, who is nearly blind and deaf and might foolishly be aggressive with a newcomer. I've done what I can, but will wait a week or two to see how many foster homes are still needed and then decide what to do.

Until then, I'm turning off the TV and asking the dog to bury the remote control in what's left of the back yard.

Thank you for the thread, Carson. And thanks to whoever posted the PetSmart Charities link.

I did that over the weekend. Had to.

The story about Oprah's crew taking the 14-year-old pup for the young man who wouldn't leave without him made me sob.

Damn.

On a brighter note, I've exchanged several emails with the Susan-Lyn Palmieri and the pet adoption place, sending all our info. I love how they check with your veterinarian for references - trying to ensure the safety of the animals they place.

Good people.

We've offered to take 2 dogs. Ruff, ruff.
