There is transportation provided, with people ready and waiting, for upwards of 200 dogs and 150 cats so far rescued from the devastation of hurricane Katrina. What these animals need is a place to go. Kennels, boarding, vets offices, shelters with any extra space, foster homes and rescues. Even one or two open kennels would greatly help.

From what we know, all animals have been vaccinated and are in good health considering the conditions. There are dogs and cats of every breed and size. Some are in groups of two, three or four, hailing from the same family, while some are solitary. ANY KENNEL SPACE AVAILABLE CAN CERTAINLY BE USED. These drivers are willing to move these animals ANYWHERE they need to go. Absolutely anywhere.

The current safe houses for these animals are being inundated and some of these pets will have to be euthanized if they are not moved to make room for the incoming animals.

Please feel free to pass on this information everywhere. Every forum, every list, every community.

REMEMBER THESE ANIMALS WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO YOU.

If you know anyone, anywhere, that is willing to take in even one cat or dog, please have them contact Lynda at the information provided below.

They are also asking for ANY kind of donations for the animals - money, food, bedding, water, etc.

PM me for contact information. I'm taking one dog myself. Please help these pets, if you have any space at all, or if you know of anywhere they can go.

The Humane Society has mobilized for rescue and recovery of animals - you can make a monetary dontation HERE.

Good on you, Carson.

If I didn't have a small zoo already, I would take em all. :rose:

Oh Christ, Carson. This on top of everything else?

I can't stand to see animals in trouble. People are bad enough, but at least they can understand what's happening to them. Animals just break my heart.

But how are we supposed to take in animals sight unseen? What if their owners are looking for them?

Doc, I think it's time for you to absorb yourself into a novel or rent a movie. You need to slowly back away from reality for a little while. I'm worried about your mental health as well as your heart. :rose:

There are animals that needs temporary homes because their owners have been evacuated and can't keep their pets in the shelters. Our local Humane Society is completely overwhelmed with these.

They will ship them to Kansas?

We have too many cats already - that just breaks my heart. We have future plans to get two dogs and we do have a fenced backyard. I need to toss this by my husband.

PM on the way.

I know. I can only hope that the owners will find them. At least if they are fostered somewhere, there's a chance. If they're euthanized, there is NO chance.

Carson love, why don't you post this in the GB too...it gets more hits than the AH and I'm sure there might be a few people there that would help too. :rose:

Maybe you're right.

When I was a kid, they used to have ads on TV for an amusement park called Riverview. Their slogan was "Laugh Your Troubles Away!"

Even as a kid I used to imagine someone being evicted from their house, having their wife run off with the UPS man, and just finding our they had brain cancer, sitting on a roller coast and laughing their fucking troubles away at Riverview!

You can imagine what that laughter sounded like in my head.

Maybe I'll rent a movie. What do you think, "Titanic?" "Shoa?"

Add "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "Old Yeller too".

I just don't want you to burn out babe, you're too dear to us. :rose:

Aw, I'm so glad I didn't have to go over there and kick ass.
My snake just died....I would take in reptiles if I could.
I can't help but wonder about the other animals, the wild ones that didn't make it...or the horses and cows, etc that perished.

And the zoo? That amazing NO zoo? Any word on what happened there?

New Orleans Zoo and Aquarium faring well since hurricane

The Audubon Zoo, the Aquarium of the Americas, the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans survived Hurricane Katrina relatively unscathed according to reports from operators of the facilities. However, in neighboring Mississippi, the Gulport Marine Life Oceanarium aquarium was totally destroyed.

Dan Maloney, general curator at the Audubon Zoo, reports that although "attendance is really down," the staff that have stayed at the zoo are doing fine.

During the storm, loss of animal life was reportedly limited to four flamingos at the zoo and a whooping crane at the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species (ACRES). Animal keepers have been flown in by helicopter and supplies will soon be arriving by boat from Baton Rouge Zoo.

Animal food stocks are holding up well except for some of the specialty items such as waxworms and crickets, while humans have found their own food supplies on zoo grounds. There is enough fuel to keep generators running for quite some time and since the zoo was so well prepared for this disaster, emergency workers and police actually are coming to the zoo to get their vehicles fueled.

Security directly around the facilities are not a concern, though gunshots have been heard in the area. Increased police and military presence in the city means the aquarium staff should be able to get back in the building soon.

Yes! I want to help animals affected by Hurricane Katrina and other disasters by supporting The Humane Society of the United States' (HSUS) Disaster Relief Fund.

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, The HSUS has launched a massive relief effort to rescue animals and assist their caregivers in the disaster areas. Our highly trained Disaster Animal Response Teams are now in Louisiana and Mississippi coordinating a multi-state animal rescue and recovery effort. Our Disaster Response Unit, and other rescue vehicles affiliated with our teams, are in Mississippi.

Our entire relief effort is funded by donations from people like you, and we desperately need your support. Please make an emergency contribution to our Disaster Relief Fund today! To donate, please complete the information on our secure online form below. Your tax-deductible gift will be used exclusively for our disaster animal relief work.
