Hello from London!

Where are all the history loving tourists when you need them. Just been offered tickets for Ceremony of the Keys for tonight.

Seriously, the Tower of London is a great day out for the history buffs. Try to visit when the language school kids aren't in town, they have no respect for anyone's crown jewels. The yeoman warders are highly entertaining (Don't call them beefeaters!) And the Norman chapel of St.John is spiritual. Just have to remember it is a palace of infinite tragedy.
It's yonks since I was last there, I keep promising myself a week of Historic Royal Palaces but life keeps getting in the way.

Having been down to London a few times it is actually terrible that I have never been in. The ceremony sounds wonderful and something a little special.

Do they not like the term beefeaters or is it just entirely incorrect for what they do? Not being sarcastic, just genuinely curious :)

I was always led to believe that the term beefeaters is derived from the French 'boufetier' or food taster. The guards at the Tower are Yeoman Warders, they wear a Tudor uniform but their present day role was actually devised by King Edward VII when Prince of Wales as part of a marketing exercise to popularise the monarchy following the self- imposed exile of Victoria after Albert's death. He updated a load of ceremonies including the Changing of the Guard and the Trooping of the Colour.

Thank you sir, appreciate the clarification. Always enjoyed learning about history so this is my new fact of the day :)

They are also all Ex-Military Warrant Officers with minimum 22yrs services and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Up until a few years ago, Royal Navy were excluded due to a various misdemeanours throughout the years but are no allowed to apply.

They have to memorise the history of the tower and pass muster at reciting whilst walking and dealing with interruptions before before allowed to wear the uniform.

Their guardroom is also the longest manned guardroom in the British Military.

Aaaaahhh there you are...I was wondering when you would wade in on this one. Pretty surprised to hear they let those Royal Navy boys in though.... we’ve all heard the stories ;)

That is pretty intense. While I am not always a fan of every single tradition the British Isles has to offer something that has that sort of history behind it impresses me. Working in IT I get very used to the new coming in very quickly and many things becoming obsolete so when I hear about these guys doing what they do it makes me smile a little bit.

There are some quality videos of them giving the tour on YouTube. I'll dig some links out tomorrow.

Possibly lobbed a bit of a grenade into the playground...

I know, I should know better... thought I’d warn in case the shit storm leaks into here (in which case I’m sorry)...

Let them try. Probably get incredibly short shrift for many in here.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. Just about to go and run my 100th Park run. Only taken 6 years.

Congrats!!! I’ve yet to do my first, despite living a stones throw from one

We got your back, Allia.

I got my first troll PM! Bless his cotton socks.

Congratulations on your first!

I’ve celebrated on your behalf... just as my neighbour opened her curtains and probably wondered what sort of nonsense I was up to now...

Seriously though, ignore the trolls - those fuckers are everywhere but they can’t hold a candle to your brilliance,

Congratulations, I know people that do them regularly up here and that is quite an achievement. Hopefully you enjoy it :)

Nothing says celebration like a good bueno (least that is what I think it is). I do enjoy them as a snack.

And while you are running I am booking myself a holiday in a small fit of excitement and mild sadness, which is an odd combination, for a little mini trip to Vienna in December. I am hoping that there will be a little snow, but not too much.

Why the sadness?

I’ve not yet made it to Vienna, I’d love to go - lucky you,

Its been a tough year, and i the last month it peaked with a small series of events both in work and out of it that has caused a bout of unhappy feelings. It is nothing major but enough that its made it a pretty rough time, I am still trying to figure out the outlet for them all at this stage, bar opening an online blog and splurging them all in one go lol. I will spare Lit the full ramblings, you are all safe :)

So the holiday is 90% because I adore travel and seeing the world. I am already looking at what is possible for next year as I slowly finish off conquering Europe in a tourist capacity but 10% feels slightly like it is running away for a little bit which I am wondering if that is the healthy response or not. But the flights are booked now so stuff it, Vienna and opera here I come. And if if it is anything like my normal holidays, there will be a lot of pictures.

Anyway sorry for the ramblings folks, Let the lighthearted nature continue. My next stop today is the gym (which I very much cannot be arsed with) and then off to see some poetry as part of the book festival. And possibly eating a very unhealthy meal at a local burger joint with chilli fries. Because those are the best fries.

Feel free to rant here... or if you like on my thread, lord knows I rant enough - sometimes you need to...

And I am absurdly jealous that your day includes live poetry and good food... enjoy it lovely, and let us know gorgeous it is later, x
