OMG!!! I put my photography portfolio into the recycle bin (don't ask)..and deleted it!! Is there any way I can get it back? PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!

I think Aquila left and WH isn't here.

It's not totally gone--yet.

You have a recoverable folder somewhere.

What O/S do you run?

from what I understand..

Yep.. you are fucked. You already emptied your recycle bin correct?

I don't think there is any way to recover what you have deleted from there. That is why they always ask if you are sure you want to delete it.

*takes out paper and pen*

I'm taking notes. I didn't know you could recover anything.

windows me huh?

That have a restore feature? have GoBack?

Don't do anything yet. Sometimes gone is not GONE.

Somebody will come along who knows.

Yes it does fgarvb1, but don't have a clue how to do it. I called Gateway tech support and the guy I talked to did not think it would help...

A short version of my PM rsponse for the edifiction of others:

Once you empty the recycle bin, the disk clusters occupied by those files ar released to be reused by other programs and going to the web for help just reuses them for your temporary internet files. The files are permanently gone, and are probablygone beyond even the aility of a data recovery specialist to help.

Norton's System Works, if running before you emptied the recycle bin might be able to help by restoring things from it's disk mirror function -- where it saves a copy of your disk(s) each time the system is restarted.

There are other utilities, like Go-Back, that would give you a chance to recover from a mistake like this, but like system works, they would have to be running before and when you emptied the recycle bin.

Unless you have some automatic backup or restore program running, your portfolio is gone forever.

You probably can still save it if you are running Norton Utilities or Systemworks..

There is a utility in NOrton Utilities called Unerase. It will search for all recently deleted files on your harddrive and give you a list. It provides several options for recovering deleted files and one of them may help.

If you know the name of your portfolio folder and know the approximate time it was deleted that will help you narrow the search. Norton's unerase will list all of your deleted files. Just use the information you have to find it. If it can find it all you have to do is hit the recover button and it will restore your folder for you.

Whenever you delete files they are still on your computer, until they have been written over by newer data. I have used Nortons unerase feature for about ten years and have found it to be very useful for recovering lost data. Whenever you erase or delete files all your computer does initially is erase the files or folders address on your harddrive. The data is still there, but by erasing its address, you are telling your computer that those clusters are now available for new data to be written to on your harddrive. I have found it possible to recover data up to weeks later with Unerase. What determines if you can recover your lost data or not is whether those clusters have had new data written to them.

Good luck....

I was just looking at Nortons Utilities. The unerase program is called "Unerase Wizard". When you open it it will give you two options to start off with.

1. Find all recoverable data, or (if you don't know your file/folder name)

2. Find data matching your criteria (you can type in the file/folder name if you know it)

Number two is the quickest and easiest if you know the name of your file/folder, but the other method works well also if you get to this as soon as possible.

Also, if you have Norton's installed on your computer check the Norton's Protected Recycled Bin. This adds one additional layer of protection against accidents.

Rodney..I have norton antivirus but not utilites. If I went to Walmart tomorrow and bought it would it still help me?

Grrrrr. How could you accidently do this?

I know, you said "don't ask".

Once it's been written over, there is nothing you can do. If you downloaded anything, you may have overwritten it.

As WH said, it's probably gone.

I'm pretty sure you would have to have Norton System works already installed for it to work.

Do not save anything else to your hard drive. That is the first thing you must do.

Give me a few minutes to type in a longer response. I just wanted to post this immediately.

I will be right back!!!

He already did. He was downloading something, so he's probably fucked.

She did start to download something but stopped halfway through it because she was told that the program could not help

Sorry, didn't mean to get your gender wrong.

But you could have already overwritten the hard drive. There is no recovery when that happens.
