See that is interesting

Ok this may or may not even be related...but I have a feeling it does...

Pick up a diet coke or pretty much any other soda and read how

PHENYLKETONURICS are used specifically PHENYLALANINE.

Now, these things may not be completely related, but the similarity in spelling surely means there is a connection somewhere.

Not counting some of the other bad things in a soda pop, I am convinced that drinking a can of pop is every bit as damaging as say smoking a cig.

I watched my grandma on my father side die a slow and painful death over a period of an entire month. Her only vice in life was a 6 pack of diet coke a day.

Anyways, not sure if this is related, but its funny when I saw the word, I made the association. Maybe someone who is more knowledgable about PHENYLKETONURICS can confirm or deny if there is a connection.

There is no connection...

Phenylketonuria is a metabolic disorder that results when the PKU gene is inherited from both parents. When babies are born in the United States, a heel stick blood test is done to test for various disorders - PKU is one of the disorders that is tested for. It is very rare, in the US an average of 1 in 15,000 babies is born with the disorder (this number varies from region to region). If a baby is tested positive for PKU at birth, a follow up test is done a few days later. Out of 500 babies which do test positive for PKU on the first test, on average only one will actually have the disorder.

So, what is PKU? What happens to people that have it?

People with PKU have a deficiency of an enzyme which is necessary for the proper metabolism of an amino acid called Phenylalanine (i.e., the component in diet soda included in the warning). Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid and it is found in nearly all foods which contain protein: meat (of all kinds), dairy products, nuts, beans, tofu... the list goes on and on.

Additionally, phenylalanine is found in aspartame, the sweetener found in most diet soft drinks and sugar-free candies/gum, hence the need for the warning on the labels of these products. Those of us that have PKU must follow a strict "low protein" diet to avoid all food sources that have high phenylalanine content. To get adequate amounts of other amino acids found in protein (without the damaging phenylalanine), people with PKU also have to take a special formula which is usually in the form of a liquid beverage.

Thank you inari for that explanation.

Sorry KC for rabbit trailing or detracting from your post.

If they wouldn't make those 10 dollar words all sound alike it wouldn't have happened.

*lol* well, when you have a chemistry background, it makes it easier to separate out which parts of the word means what. It was the enirely painful year of organic chemistry that pounded it into my skull.

*ugh*
