You don't have to say if you liked it or not. You can if you want to though.

It was okay. But definitely a better play than movie. At least you didn't ask about Rebel Without a Cause lol

I agree. A better play than movie but I usually like the play better than the movie.

Back when Puerto Ricans were the hated ethnics du jour. :)

No, but I read the script in book form. Didn't much care for it, actually. Shakespeare it isn't.

It's easier to suspend disbelief when you're watching live theater.

A realistic story about rival youth gangs in New York does not require suspension of disbelief; but spontaneous outbreaks of singing and choreographed dancing do.

We used to listen to the soundtrack album while trimming the tree when I was growing up.

I love it. Music, lyrics, choreography = great! I hated the leads' singing being dubbed though. :(

The Rita Moreno "America" number is one of my all-time favorites. I have watched it 100 times.

Sure I've seen it....and love it.

So many say "the play is better" well, which generation and by which performing company? How many millions were exposed to the production and music by the movie that never would have seen the play? In addition to many regional and local productions (performing in some), I saw the 1980 Broadway revival and it was magical.

As a musician, I've played songs from it in many orchestras including playing the whole score in orchestras for stage performances. I've also sang music from it in several serious chorale organizations.

The music is magical and some of the most iconic in contemporary musical history.

Thanks for asking, now I'm putting around the house singing "Maria" and "Tonight" (baritone with great extension into the tenor range). Good thing my wife is out of town but she's actually used to me bursting into song. The dogs think I'm crazy though.

i'm not forty, but i will be in a year or so, but i have seen it. i like (love some of) the music and natalie wood was pretty, but meh.

I have not. I intend to, but new stuff keeps bumping this and other classics from my must-watch list.

Another trained musician! I've never had the chance to play West Side Story. I did use Maria to learn a triton during ear training. Only Bernstien could get away with that in a musical.

I recall a Donny and Marie parody-skit called "Weight Side Story" where everybody was really fat.

TONY TO MARIA: You're the apple of my eye!

EVERYBODY, LICKING LIPS AND RUBBING HANDS TOGETHER: Mmmmmm!

TONY: You're sweeter than sugar!

EVERYBODY: Mmmmmm!

I love old musicals. Big Gene Kelly fan. Singing in the Rain is my fave. Brigadoon is an awesome story. West Side Story is very good.

There's a well-reviewed production at the Ordway in St. Paul this week. A lot of the cast came from Teatro del Pueblo.
