Have you ever thought about becoming homeless by choice?

I mean say you have a lot of money saved up in the bank, but you chose to live on the streets and get wasted all the time for fun. You keep your ATM card in a hiding place in the park or somewhere and go get money periodicially so you don't have to beg or go to the soup kitchen.

The main problem I'd see is that its not safe to sleep on the streets, homeless are frequent victims of crime. Plus there's police harassment, hard to find a toilet, and of course having to buy Obamacare coverage. On the other hand, though, it would be less stressful than work and certainly provide a sense of freedom.

Anyone ever considered doing this?

I'm not sure why anybody would want to be off the grid.

There's a certain appeal to not having to worry about bills, taxes, car payments, etc.
Being out of the mainstream mundanity of 'normal' life.
But there's a better way than living on the streets!

Not one that comes close to comparing to running water, electricity and internet connections.

There's a guy in the next town who hasn't had electricity for many years. He charges his phone at the library and doesn't use any electic devices other than that.
Mind you, he is kinda strange in other ways!

You can't really live off the grid when you're a Klan member.

Many years ago, I was homeless not by choice. It sucked then and I know it would suck worse now.

My fathers uncle did it.

The uncle graduated Ole Miss and Vanderbilt and MIT (civil engineer) then joined the army. During the war he worked on the Alaska Highway. After the war he bought some land 75 miles from Anchorage, and lived the rest of his life a hermit. Johns brother (my grandfather) was also a civil engineer, and a recluse who lived in a cabin atop a mountain in East Tennessee.

I too am a recluse and have no friends to speak of. Every time I participate in a social event I regret it. People are boring and damaged goods and cant resist practicing their social rackets. Dogs are better companions.

I just watched a netflix movie, but it was pretty famous outside of that. It was called 'Into the Wild'. It's based on a true story of a college grad who decided to leave behind his rich family and be a homeless person. I recommend it.

Not by choice,but maybe necessity...

:"We re all just a paycheck or two from being homless":,the saying goes, haven t you heard that?

I confess to having received a 2 yr degee in mental health social work.

I took the state exam here in NC for Social Work Technician back around 1982 or 83 so Im a Registered Soc Work Tech here, but Im a white male. That and a buck will buy me a cup of coffee.

Anways, maybe thats why I ve had more meditation on the homeless thing than others.

I watch the news stories and documentaries, hear about the famines and refugees, including the domestic ones.

I ve Lived a handicapped life ,where Id be there without the grace of God,and a pension.Im still walking a half hr a day ,tho, cant do much more than that, tried a few mo back, and had to call a cab,on the way to the auto repair shop, heart getting worse as I age.

I think some may be brain damaged from having a stroke or heart attack,so they can t keep it together,in some cases.

They stopped handing out the FEMA mfg homes. So ,the next best thing is the Tents,& setting up caming sites like at public parks.A 10x17 can be got at a big box store for $120 to 300 ike a walmart.com.Then there s the other camping gear,I built some links to that effect into my health and longlife resource pgs, incl surplus stores.

Then I coupled them to my 4 leaf clover sales for charity fundraisers, for the red cross as well as a 20 pg apx talisman set. So,I ve been doing these for the past 22 yrs as a fundraiser for red cross efforts, like I said ,I received a soc work type degree back in 79,B ave overall.

Veterans disproportionately end up homeless,I don t think by choice, the handicapped, substance abusers, mentally ill,ex offenders, run aways, broken, abusive homes, gays, throw away family members...I worked in a retardation facility a yr while going to college. It said 3 % are born with sub normal intellegence in my nursing inservice classes, about maybe 1000 clock hours I attended at that particular facility. In medical jobs, they throw away 1/2 the nurses, which 1/2 get like MS symptoms from their systems fighting off the hospital infections.

Me,I was unwanted as employee after having some medical issues diagnosed, and the insurance people pass that info on to each other. So ,I hired a lawyer that got me a pension, besides not being able bodied to do normal manual labor, part of the reason I got my particular type of degree,it was 99% women in my class.I was there because I already worked in the mental health dept of the states civil service division as a psych attendant nurse....

They got some detectives that do it by choice,as their plainclothes identities,worldwide...
