Are there any fans of JP Tate’s novel “Dutiful: a love story of consensual sadomasochism” on this forum? http://www.amazon.com/Dutiful-love-story-consensual-sadomasochism-ebook/dp/B00G1XOXLW I found it a much more literary book than most S/m literature and way more insightful and thought-provoking. There’s so much in it that there is a lot to discuss (and no doubt disagree about!), so I’m wondering if anyone else here has read it?

The views of female submissives would be especially relevant and interesting, of course, given the focus of the book. Did you identify with the protagonist? Was her understanding of herself anything like your own?

Oh dear. Clearly no one else on the forum has read Dutiful. That's a pity, as it's the best BDSM novel I've ever read. Anyway, never mind.

Lit's BDSM forum can be bit slow at times. Just because you haven't gotten a response in a few hours, doesn't mean there isn't any interest of no one has read the book. Patience. ;)

(I haven't read the book.)

Hi

I have read this book :)

I thought her views were very interesting and gave a direct insight to what life as a slave was actually about without appearing fake.

Most enjoyable xxx

Yes, I think what elevates this book above most BDSM literature is that because the central protagonist (the female submissive) is so intelligent and self-analytical the story is far more than just a chain of events in which there are BDSM scenes. It really has something to say about the nature of consensual sadomasochism.

What do you think about (what I take to be) the central theme of the book: that in any sexual relationship, whether BDSM or vanilla, the success of the relationship comes from having an honest understanding of your own needs and an accurate understanding of the needs of your lover? Personally, I'm completely sold on that idea, it makes perfect sense to me.

[SPOILER WARNING] The way that the book contrasts the successful relationship of the BDSM lovers who really understand each other with the failed relationship of the BDSM couple who don't understand each other (and also made further contrasts with various vanilla relationships) really made the point very convincingly.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only person who's a fan of the book. :)
