That's what the NYT says.

What book should an 8 year old read until then?

THe Phantom Tollbooth
THe Giver
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or anything by Roald Dahl

try the 'Thin Books' thread

:D

Personally, I couldn't care less about Harry Potter

You could give your child 'The Fellowship of the Ring' like my Mum did when i was about 8/9...

I even managed to read it all

Harry Potter 1-4. I heard it would be out THIS summer.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo! Say it ain't so!

I need my Harry Potter fix, thank GAWD the movie's coming out for sale.

As for any other book for your kid, all the ones mention are great.. I read 'em all. I say just let 'em loose in the library and let him pick whatever looks interesting.

Well, you won't believe this, but the way I found Lit was whilst I was searching for info on when would HP5 come out... I ended up finding this really cool story where Harry and Hermione find themselves trapped alone in that secret tunnel in HP3... maybe you could give the 7/8 year old that... and then again, maybe not...

I always liked the boxcar children books, laura ingles wilder...uhm...the little princess...course, I'm a girl. I'll second the Roald Dahl suggestion, ANYTHING by him is genius.
