I have been having trouble with my computer. I keep getting a message that says I don't have enough memory to open a programs. This happens with various programs, not just one. Not sure if its related but my AIM has been acting strange too. PLEASE HELP

Have you made any changes to your system lately? Any new programs or did any application deleting? That's the first step in a solution.

No, I have not made any changes. AFTER the probelm started happening, I began to uninstall any programs I no longer use, but it has not helped.

Harold is great for these kinds of things! I had that happen to me once or twice. I cleaned out my cookies , emptied the recycle bin and restarted my PC. Ya never know , give it a try!

I'm assuming you're using a Windows-type machine. From my experiences with windows, it helps to just reformat every once in a while... it seems to clear out accumulated odds and ends from old programs and all that good stuff.

Also, how much RAM do you have and what version of windows? Just curious.

What Zuleffect asked, plus, Does rebooting cure the problem for a time?

Have you run a virus scan with a current pattern file?

Early releases of Windows ME had a problem with the memory mangement that would cause the problem you're having, but rebooting would cure it for a while. There is a fix available from Microsoft for the WinME memory problem.

yes if i knew what version of windows you have i could help you.i had the same problem.the problem usually occurs when your "virtual memory" becomes to full you can fix this by

1)right clicking your my computer icon and selecting properties
2)click the advanced tab and you should see "performance","user settings" and "recovery" click the performance setting button which should open the performance option window
3)click the advance tab.down near the bottom of that menu you should see "virtual memory" click the change tab and make the "paging file size" larger to about 800MB or higher (i think the default is 670MB i prefer making it to 800 or 1000MB).click the "set" button then you may exit the windows and problem should be solved.

hope this helps note that these are steps for windows XP im not sure if the steps are the same in lower versions of windows

You do NOT need to reformat.

Log onto the Windows Update site and look for the patches to Win ME to fix the memory management bug, or upgrade to a newer version of Windows -- Reformatting will NOT fix the bug in Win ME that's causing your problem.

That's definitely a spyware problem -- Laurel has put a link on the front page of the site to an online spyware checker that will remove the spyware that causes the pop-ups.

Spybot Search and Destroy or AdAware 6.0 should also find and remove the pop-up program. (both are easily found with Google.)

I can definetly vouch for Adaware 6.0. That is one program any web user should get.

Ok I checked out Windows website. I saw that I needed the "critical" updates which I did, but non of them said anything about the memory problem. I can't find were you can search for specific updates or fixes.

The memory fix is included in critical updates for Win ME.

I don't spend all that much time at any Windows or other microsoft website, but IIRC, there is a search function where you can track down specific problems, but everythng is organised for techs and geeks so it's dificult to find anything specific.

However, finding the specific problem is only going to tell you to download the critical updates or a specific service pack most of the time anyway.

PS: do you still have the problem after installing the updates?

Adaware 6.0 is a great program and helped me out in the past..........
Also What was said about Kazza is true they will pack your pc full of pop ups..........

Well, I did the whole Spyware thing a couple of days a go and that solved that problem. But, I was still having trouble with my memory. That is when I did the critcial updates. So far, no more trouble but it the problem was coming and going, so I don't really know if it completely fixed yet. I read what the updates were and none of them sounded like the right answer but I guess we shall see. Thanks for all the help.

The problem with Memory and Win ME is that it dosn't release memory properly when a program is done with it. How quickly the problem shows up depends on how many programs you open and close, and how much memory each program uses.

I'm not sure that I've ever seen MS formally admit the problem exists, but one of the first Win ME Service packs fixes the problem anyway.
