Let the good times roll. It's Mardi Gras day and a great day for parades and fun. To top that off, we've even got the dead sea scrolls in town to enjoy.

Happy carnival everyone. Let's all Mamba down the streets. :p

I've never celebrated Mardi Gras.
But I've always wanted to...
Tell me more about it! How will you spend today?

oh, hell! I'd forgotten that today is Fat Tuesday!!!!

I started a thread the other day to tell what's going on outside. Truth is faff all.

Been cold and wet, Sunday Parade had just 5 floats!

Today's brighter, the Samba is buzzing off the buildings - mercifully at a lower volume. Parade starts in the next hour. Steeets full of kiddies dressed as fairies, clowns, cowboys.

This morning 6.00 am I spied three sorrowful 'aliens' wending their silverfoiled way back to their car after the Costume Ball at the Football Club.

If anything interesting happens, I'll report back.

Is this the day Brits make pancakes?

Perdita

On Shrove Tuesday (New Olrleans Mardi Gras day) there has been a pancake race at Olney in Buckinghamshire since 1445. However, this may be only a passing fancy, we shall just have to wait and see.

Pancake race = racing with pancakes. It's the Brit equivalent of the Rio Carnival.

I had Pancakes for breakfast today. I feel so hedonistic.

Ok, I have some batter left. I'll whip another up and whack it in a jiffy bag for you. :rose:

You got me, RR. What is a pancake race?

The Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race

Rules
1) Pancakes will be inspected by judges and distributed to contestants. *
2) Race begins with the following command: “ARE YOU READY? GO!!!”
3) Pancake must be flipped before and after the race to prove contestants are in possession of “official pancake” and that the pancake has not been secured to the pan.
4) Pancake must be flipped at least three times during the course of the race.
5) Contestants must stay in their designated lanes. Lanes marked pending weather (windy) conditions.
6) If a participant drops the pancake, The participant must either take a five second penalty OR recite the following. (Pre-race declaration of contestant’s option is NOT required.)
"Pancakes are good,
Pancakes are greasy,
I thought flippin’ pancakes was
Gonna be easy."
7) Battered Pancake Rule: If a pancake becomes mutilated, the contestants are entitled to a re-run with refreshed pancake. The Battered Pancake rule must be invoked before conclusion of the current race. A re-run will be conducted immediately.
8) The winner is the individual who crosses the finish line first. Immediately after crossing the finish line, contestants must flip the pancake (see rule #3) and return to judges’ table for inspection of pancakes and awarding of the prize.
9) At the end of the races, the winners may take a ceremonial “winners lap” around the course. Flipping the pancake for the press and adoring public is optional.

*Pre-manufactured pancakes are used, as they have already been measured to a standardized weight and diameter. By opening an “official” package on race day, the judges are assured that there has been no pancake tampering for aerodynamics, weight or “maple goodness.”

Just off to make the pancakes now. Including the bacon and onion dip/filling. I'm fat anyway. who cares?

Just rub it in, Gauche. I'm so hungry now. (All puns intended :p .)

Now you guys got me hungry for pancakes. Came home to take a break from the parades and end up cooking pancakes. lol

It was a great morning and will be a better night. The streets are full of revelers yelling "Throw me something Mister." The floats have been great this year. Beads, moonpies, cups and coins are flying into the crowds. Marching bands are playing, singing groups are rolling.

I did catch a pair of panties with a joker on the front. The girl who pointed at me and threw them to me must of had a reason. lol Damn I love this time of year.

OMG I missed pancake day!!

Wait its not too late - now where is that frying pan?

Not really no, the main reason being that up here, we're not soft southern nonces. Lemon and sugar? We don't need no lemon and sugar.
