Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras. Carnival. Festivale. Pancake Day. Shrove Tuesday. (Here in Houston it always overlaps with the Rodeo too -- a double whammy).

So how are you celebrating? I expect Ginny in here with pics by the time I return.

We had King's Cake flown in from the Big Easy the other day -- talk about a sugar rush -- and I didn't get the baby!!!!!!

Let the Good Times Roll!

I'm a proponent of alcohol as an adjunct to such celebrations. That's appropriate, IMHO, especially when one has had the sort of night I just did.

Italian wine is called for.

I'm going back to bed.

Bubs I'll be back. Late tonight with a bottle of red & beads.

Party time

....nice to see so many people in a festive mood...here it´s in the middle of the afternoon, spring is far away and carnival is something we hear about from Rio...but a glass of good red wine is never wrong...cheers to you all!

Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras. Carnival. Festivale. Pancake Day. Shrove Tuesday -you named them all.

If today we are to over indulge in all wordly sinful pleasures, What are you going to partake in??

SHOW US YOUR TITS!!!!!

Hey, I'm just getting into the Mardi Gras spirit....

Wishing I was in Rio this year, again.

Oh yeah, today is Mardi Gras. I almost forgot. If I start posting a lot more in the next week, it means I got bored at work tonight and tried to get me some beads.

I get bored at work A LOT. It could be an interesting night at the hotel...

Hiya someplace! Tell me about this Kings Cake, and what are beads?:)

lol@Texan!

I'd like to go to Rio with Texan!!!! (If he'd take me I'd show him my tits too!)

Happy Mardi Gras!

Tonight my church has a pancake supper, so I'll be going to that.

And right now, I'm wearing the Mardi Gras pin sent to me by a certain sweetie. Tonight, I'll don all my Mardi Gras decorations - fancy beads, bracelet - for the supper.

The beads are very fancy, one set has big plastic flowers, the other has jesters... a co-worker said, upon seeing them, "Holy shit! You must have had to do the full monty to get those!!"

ROFLMAO

I liked Mardi Gras in Athens -kinda like Halloween for them there, but with private parties.

*Flashes her tits*

Kisses Holden! I miss talking to you so much! Hope the whatevertheywerebutsoundslikePolishpancakes were good!

Intrigued, there are a LOT of parades in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. There are large floats with people standing on them high above the crowds. They toss favors to the crowds -- mostly in the form of garishly colored beads. Sometimes they throw other stuff like commemorative coins. As you can imagine, it's more than a little rowdy and much competition for the "better" beads -- most usually by flashing a part of ones anatomy.

Boo! :( That means that tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and I still dont know what I'm giving up for Lent! grrr

Kings Cake

The Epiphany, or Little Christmas, is observed in many Christian churches. This day has come to be known as "KING DAY". Since the 300's the day has honored the meeting of the Three Wise Men with the infant jesus. King Cakes became part of the celebration to symbolize the "Finding of the baby Jesus". Traditionally, King Cakes are oval-shaped to show unity of all Christians. The Mardi Gras season, which begins on this "Twelfth Night", is expressed on King Cakes by using the carnival colors of green, yellow and purple.

As a King Cake is cut, each person awaits anxiously for his piece to locate the small baby. A plastic baby is inserted in each King Cake. The person who finds the "baby" is obligated to bring a King Cake to the next seasonal celebration.

I think ours was this flavor: King Creole Praline (03)
A local favorite, enjoy a delightful combination of freshly picked Louisiana pecans, rich cream cheese and cajun cane sugar. A taste sensation that fills the senses with South Louisiana Ca C'est Bon!

More about the cakes and Mardi Gras

An observer once said that New Orleanians are either having a party, recuperating from a party, or planning a party. The biggest and best party of all and the city's most famous celebration is Mardi Gras, "the greatest free show on earth." Mardi Gras dates back to 1837 when the first street parade took place.

The carnival season begins January 6th (12 days after Christmas) on Twelfth Night with the first of nearly 100 private masked balls. The dazzling Mardi Gras parades feature marching bands and elaborate paper mache floats with maskers tossing trinkets, beads and doubloons to the crowds.

On Mardi Gras Day, the day before Ash Wednesday, the largest and longest parades are held. Rex, King of Carnival, is a prominent businessman, chosen by secret committee. His Queen is always a debutante of the current season. On Mardi Gras day, everyone joins in the costuming, young and old alike, resident and tourist.

In European countries, the coming of the wise men bearing gifts to the Christ Child is celebrated twelve days after Christmas. The celebration, called Epiphany, Little Christmas on the Twelfth Night, is a time of exchanging gifts and feasting. All over the world people gather for festive Twelfth Night celebrations. One of the most popular customs is still the baking of a special cake in honor of the three kings..."A King's Cake."

Tradition has now evolved through time to obligate the person who receives the baby (inside every King Cake!) to continue the festivities by hosting another king cake party.

King Cakes were originally a simple ring of dough with little decoration.

The King Cake is now made with a rich Danish dough, baked and covered with a poured sugar topping and decorated with the traditional Mardi Gras-colored sugars. The end result is a delicious and festive cake in traditional Rex colors: Purple, representing Justice; Green, representing Faith; Gold, representing Power. Hundreds of thousands of King Cakes are consumed at parties every year, making the King Cake another fine Louisiana tradition. A Mardi Gras party just wouldn't be a Mardi Gras party without a King Cake!

This is toooooo cool!

For all of us who cannot be there -- we can still see (some of) the action. They've got live web cams set up all around the French Quarter in New Orleans tonight. If your computer is slightly faster than my ancient wreck, you might be able to enjoy this!
