‘Health crisis’: Legislators call for return to phonics-based reading instruction

Republicans and Democrats have competing proposals to address Minnesota's declining reading scores but are hopeful a bipartisan literacy bill can be adopted.

At a recent press conference, legislative Republicans said this is because the education establishment bought into the “whole language” and “balanced literacy” approaches to reading.

They want to see increased funding for schools, teacher training programs, and tutors to invest in the science of reading, which is “explicit, systematic, cumulative instruction” based on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, said Rep. Patricia Mueller, R-Austin.

“This means there is a letter by letter processing of a word rather than ‘whole language.’ Students do not learn to read innately. We do not learn simply by being surrounded by literature,” said Mueller, who has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in literacy and recently completed a doctorate in education.

She said phonics, the “bedrock” of the science of reading, is most often the element that is excluded from teacher prep programs.

Democrats and teachers' Unions are destroying the futures of the next generation.

Now do Florida and Texas.

You really should just create a "I hate teachers and teachers unions" thread instead of making one for every state.

Forty years of all tax cuts all the time, and now they want to increase spending? Good for them, but there's only one way to raise the money they'll need...

Why do you hate children enough to defend the institutions that are failing them, or maybe, it's the culture.

Any culture that produce thoughts like you just posted is probably a zero-survival culture.

That is an ill-informed statement.
Erm, no it isn't. Since Reagan, the Republicans have treated any tax increase as absolute anathema, and they've advocated for cutting everything except defense spending to the bone. That is why our schools are starved for funds, and we can change that - but we will need to pay for it.

I'm not defending anyone or anything. ReichGuide hates teachers and teachers unions and demonstrates that in every thread he creates about them. He focuses on the blue ones because of some mental condition where it has to be about Democrats (also blacks). He's not seeking a solution, he's seeking the dissolution of the Department of Education and outlawing of teacher unions....neither of which will fix any issue.

Total bullshit. Billions have been thrown at Teacher's unions and all that's happened is they get richer, have more benefits, they work less, while standards and student learning decline. People in this country learned more in actual everyday knowledge in one-room schoolhouses in days of old than they do now in these leftwing brainwashing institutions we call "schools" today.

Because you don't want to have to pin the blame on the Idiot and his commie administration where it belongs.
The blame, to the extent that it exists is split between Trump and Biden more so on Trump if we're being honest. Most stuff was open by the time Biden took over.

However this isn't anything new, Americans haven't been reading at grade level for a long time, the fact that you put ANY blame on Biden shows you don't know what's going on. This story floats up every few months for going back as far the Bush Admin.

In the end however it just doesn't really matter. The reality is that as nice as being able to read is (and grade level is an awful metric for a lot of reasons) most people will never need to read at grade level

Hi, fresh AJ alt!

I see you're going to randomly shuttle between this one and the other two in order to dodge Laurel's pesky laser pointer, huh? :ROFLMAO:

Yeah, it is new, especially in the context of the last 20 years.

Insane bullshit.

You say insane bullshit because you really have nothing. First, did the lockdowns happen under Trump or not? I'll answer for you, they did. Kids were learning from home and that simply didn't work very well for a lot of reasons. The lock downs started in March of 2020.

Try again.

Its been at least thirty years that most students couldn't read at grade level, which you don't even know what that is, its a bad metric.

Serious question, how often in your real life do you HAVE to read more than maybe a few sentences? Not want to and if you happen to have an office job you don't really count. Most of us don't. Work in retail? No reading past that. Work in a warehouse? Possibly no reading EVER. Construction? Are the foreman cus if not minimum reading is needed.

Everyday life? Bills? Not at "Grade level", grocery store? Nope.

However GRADE LEVEL IS A BAD METRIC. Do you even know how its measured or are you talking out of your ass?

Kwit pikin on us Minosotans, we'se dunnin teh bes we kan wif teh litlle bite of mony teh stat givin us.

One of Trump’s latest campaign promises is to withhold all funding for schools that had vaccine or mask mandates.
Could anybody explain what the point of that is?

“Grade level” isn’t a bad metric, it’s no metric at all. It’s like saying someone is tall or short.

I said insane bullshit because you had nothing but insane bullshit. The lockdowns occurred under state governors. Trump was against the lockdowns:

Trump says nationwide lockdown would ‘ultimately inflict more harm than it would prevent’

PUBLISHED MON, AUG 3 2020 6:06 PM EDTUPDATED MON, AUG 3 2020 6:57 PM EDT

President Donald Trump insisted Monday that shutting down the United States in an attempt to curb the coronavirus would cause more harm than good, doubling down on previous comments that he would not call for a nationwide lockdown.

“It’s important for all Americans to recognize that a permanent lockdown is not a viable path forward producing the result that you want or certainly not a viable path forward and would ultimately inflict more harm than it would prevent,” Trump said during a White House briefing on the virus.

He said the U.S. only initially shut down to prevent the overflow of hospitals and to allow U.S. health officials and scientists to learn more about the new virus, including developing effective treatments to fight it. He said the U.S. is doing “really well” on developing coronavirus drugs and vaccines.

“Lockdowns do not prevent infection in the future. They just don’t. It comes back many times, it comes back,” Trump said.

Trump could be against lockdowns all he wanted. He was dead wrong but we're talking about a timeline. Quarantines do actually work, we fucked it up because of people like Trump and it cost us hundreds of thousands of lives. I know you don't actually care about American lives because that's not what you're about at the end of the day but it would be nice if you owned it.

Democrat governors wrecked their states, violated the Constitutional rights of their citizens, destroyed their businesses, and harmed in the extreme their kids. Florida being the shining exception.
