I tried to make it as realistic as possible, as it's quite hard to imagine total darkness if you've never experienced it. Walking under dense trees during a moonless night is not it.

It helps having been put in a total darkness situation myself now and then, including joining "dialogue in the dark", which is a tour set up and guided by blind people in total darkness, designed to give an impression of how a blind person feels. That was really an interesting experience, and highly recommended.

And well before that I've once experienced total darkness in an abandoned mine. Guide walking away with the lights, leaving the group behind. It was our task to feel our way forward - and back to the light. Took maybe a few minutes but it's the part of that tour that I remember best.
