Greatest Canadian Musician EVER!

I think Canadian Hank Snow might edge out Wilf & Stompin Tom in the hillbilly categories.

Celine Dion is the most successful canadian musician ever at $630 Million USD....making her #5 in da worl'.

Huge Rush fan. But Rush never crossed over in popularity across the range Tom did. I'm not usually a country/folk fan. The big ones like Cash and Dylan and some hippy stuff that is folky.

You want to learn what Canada is all about. No better teacher than "Stompin'" Tom Connors OC

The foot starts to stomp every time.

Hmm

I've always loved Gordon Lightfoot. His Song For A Winter's Night is just beautiful. Just one of many written by a gifted musician.

Another guy who crosses over many musical tastes. My first record albums I bought were Gordon Lightfoot's Endless Wire and Queen News to the World.

Tom rarely if ever appeared outside Canada and sold 4 million recordings.

Interesting character, but his "range", regardless of how one defines that word, wouldn't fill a thimble next to Rush.

I'm guessing the greatest musician played for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra~or went undiscovered.
Am I taking the thread title too literally?

If you were to be literal, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better Canadian musician than Joni Mitchell.

Her songwriting is included on plenty of "best of" this or that lists ....and each song has a unique guitar tuning, making it very difficult for others to play with or cover her music.

Larry Gowan is also considered a very strong composer/musician.

And David Foster is considered a very strong composer/arranger.

Perhaps musician was not correct word. Tom never claimed to be the best guitarist, song writer or singer. But put them all together and he was a great musical artist. Literally loved from coast to coast.

The words "great musical artist" and "stompin tom connors" don't belong in the same sentence.

Unless the field is between him and Boxcar Willie.

You're all wrong. BTO. Bachman-Turner Overdrive. No voice compares to Randy Bachman!

If you can play a B, E and A chord on the guitar, most of BTO and April Wine's catalogs await your immediate enjoyment!

In one of my bands we had a full hour long set of songs that used B-E-A as our last set of the night...because we were usually drunk by then.

But you didn't have Randy's voice. Hard to match that. Whatever happened to him? Guess it took you a whole hour to get through all of the great stuff they turned out.

no Joni Mitchell or Neil Young?

my vote would go to Mr. Young though.

I'm a big Joni fan, but the greatest musician in all of Canada?
There are tremendous singers and songwriters from Canada.
Joni's song "The Urge For Going" (when sung by Tom Rush) still can haunt me.
And who doesn't love a hippie chick that started chain smoking at age 11, and 60 yrs later, is still at it.

Neil "the screecher" Young would not be happy with the scant support he's getting here.
And like her or not, I think KD Lang is a better singer than C Dion.
When KD sings Young's "helpless"~it's just wow!

There are so many to choose from!
No one has mentioned Leonard Cohen yet.

If I can choose only one, it would be Gordon. Lightfoot
