This is the most poignant and devastatingly sincere war movie I've ever seen, and barely anyone has seen it.

People, you need to watch this movie. It is worth the trouble of finding it.

Since we're (by "we're", I mean "I'm") on the subject of Studio Ghibli, I'd like to also recommend my second favorite, Princess Mononoke. Even if you think you don't like anime, please watch these. I promise there are no intergalactic robots or half-naked girls bouncing around. These are quality, quality films.

I'll check it out.

Fun fact:

After you posted that Delta Rae video awhile back I was quite taken with them and went to see them in Houston at a small club. The show was outstanding. We were close enough to the stage to speak to them between songs and they were charming and funny, great people. We hung out with drummer Mike for a bit after the show. If you've explored more of their catalogue beyond 'Bottom of the River' then you know how powerful that four-part harmony was on a cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain'. Brilliant.

If you don't speak IFB, I'm saying thank you, and you have some taste credit with me ;-)

Wow, I'm glad that I could help you! I've listened to a few of their other songs, but I've not delved in as much as I should, apparently.

If you haven't seen anything from Studio Ghibli, these movies will change the way you look at animation. In Japan, the art form is taken seriously.

Yeah, but the Ghibli films are way different from the anime you're used to. They're like regular movies that happen to be animated.

So they don't have the disturbing pedophiliac feel or odd not-quite-tangible sense of racism that every anime movie ever made seems to have?

Nope. I guess you could say that Grave of the Fireflies is kinda anti-American, but it's really just anti-war.

Don't get me wrong; there's some crazy shit in some of these (especially Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away), but it's all secondary to the storyline. I'm not sure how old your kids are, but Ponyo is good for young ones.

Where would I look for it?

I'm not sure. I have a set of DVDs with all the Ghibli movies. You can probably find it on the internet, or Netflix almost certainly has it in the mail order section (not streaming).

My youngest boy tried to watch Ponyo and quit probably halfway in. I just caught bits and pieces and never cared to sit down and watch the whole thing.
It's no Spongebob.

Ponyo was not my favorite. The animation is nice, but the plot is simplistic. Fireflies is purely for adults.

As is Spongebob. The Sentence Enhancer episode is very adult. Also one of the funniest they've ever done.
No, really. Check it out sometime if you haven't already seen it. Good stuff.

I actually have seen that several times, and it is really funny. It was always my favorite episode. It's so hard to make something that kids and adults can both laugh at. The Muppets did it consistently, and a few of the better Spongebob episodes did it.

I love that one because you know what they're really saying and you have to laugh at it.

"Hey, Patrick! How the fuck are ya!"

"Fucking great, Spongebob!"

They might be saying more than that, if you believe the evangelical groups.

What's funny is that they have it all wrong. Patrick is obviously straight because in a few episodes he crushes on some girls. Spongebob has made it clear he's asexual. Krabbs is a widower and Mrs. Puff is a widow. It's Squidward who is clearly the gay one. He likes scented soaps and interpretive dance, plays the clarinet, paints and sculpts himself as really buff and dreams of being on the stage. I mean come on!

He does strike me as a bit of a dandy. Also, don't forget about that lobster guy that's always lifting weights on the beach, and Sandy's rather blatant lesbianism.

Larry is possibly a closeted gay but he does like the ladies out in the open so there is room for doubt.
No doubt about Sandy though. The only nuts she enjoys come from trees.

That's why she moved to the bottom of the ocean. They just could not accept her alternative lifestyle in Texas.

Maus. It's my favorite ever comic book. There aren't any superheroes or action scenes, but there is a true story of life and loss amidst the backdrop of World War II Europe. If you haven't read it, you really should. Here's a link to an online version:

Let me know if it doesn't work for you.
