But to humor you. A living is what is nessecary to sustain yourself so that you can make the next day's living. What this is depends on different factors such as where you live, your medical situation, whether you have legal dependents, what your community and society expects of you, whether what you do for a living adds costs, et al.

Republicans are starting to push back on one of the new proposals President Obama made in Tuesday night's State of the Union, an increase in the minimum wage.

In asking that the minimum wage rise from $7.25 an hour to $9 an hour, Obama told members of Congress that the step would benefit millions of working families.

"It could mean the difference between groceries or the food bank; rent or eviction; scraping by or finally getting ahead," Obama said...

The president also proposed indexing the minimum wage to inflation, saying that "working folks shouldn't have to wait year after year for the minimum wage to go up while CEO pay has never been higher."

Republicans are irrelevant. The issue is the ruling party and its Great Leader, not a shriking minority party that the media loves to trot out as some allegedly all powerful boogeyman that really has no power at all.

Lets discuss the real issue here, Obama and the Democrat leadership believe that inciting the masses with populist rhetoric and specious issues so they will support the regime and its agenda is more important than actually helping those same masses get jobs. Obviously, there will be less hiring and a contracting economy by pushing this entry level salary to such extremely high levels. Yet, they have done focus groups and the average person somehow views this as "showing we care about the less fortunate." I think they simply ignore the reality of what minimum wage is and who actually gets it (entry level workers, teenagers, and people who get most of their pay in tips). Its a feel good issue for the misguided and the foolish. The Democrats know perfectly well it will cost jobs and shrink the economy, but the political advantage of pushing this through AND having the media attack their boogeyman opponents for opposing it in any way is politically advantageous and they know it. Its actually very sad.

If they really cared about good quality jobs for working Americans they would be talking about repealing the "free" trade treaties that have been passed in the past thirty years that have decimated our industrial base. Not a peep out of them about this, of course, because they don't really mind the lousy economy so long as they can incite the masses that there is some boogeyman who is keeping them down rather than the regime's own policies doing it.

Its not ever worth debating the unmerits of such a stupid idea as this. The Democrat leadership knows perfectly well its a dumb idea to push this to such a high level, will cost jobs, shrink the economy, and probably cause inflation.

They are using it because their focus groups tell them its a "feel good" populist issue and best of all they can further demonize their opponents if they dare to come out against it. Its a political spear and they could care less if it actually makes the economy worse and hurts more people than it helps.

There are massive problems with your "it's just an entry level wage" rationalization.

1) Younger workers working at an entry level still need to survive and maybe feed their kid(s) or something.

2) In a recession people often have to take less desirable jobs such as ones that pay min wage-ish. Should they not make enough to survive?

3) Your own theory says that higher starting wages will incentivize people outside the work force to get up and look for a job. Now you're conveniently ignoring your own beliefs.

4) Min wage jobs mean that workers working full time are eligible for a range of costly welfare benefits. If people make $9 instead then they're much less likely to be eligible except for maybe WIC or something. If you want to cut government spending then this is how you do it.
