This year's midterm elections could hand the GOP control of the Senate a full two months before the new Congress is sworn in - even if Republicans fail to win an overall majority, according to Capitol Hill's political bible, Roll Call.

If Sen. Jean Carnahan, D-Mo., loses her re-election bid to Republican challenger Jim Talent, the Republicans intend to take control right away, since that's what the rules allow.

Carnahan was only selected to fill her seat until someone could be elected to replace her late husband. Under Missouri law, Talent could be sworn in immediately following the election.

That would return control of the Senate to Republicans, at least until the new Congress is sworn in, even if the GOP lost seats in other Senate races.

Democrats are already preparing for a Carnahan defeat and the possible changing of the guard for a brief lame-duck session, Roll Call says.

[You want to talk about one nasty election... You should see and hear the ads. PURE EVIL. Both sides!]

Really, the ads between the two haven't been that bad until the last week or so.

There was an RNC ad that was on TV at least three weeks ago that did everything but put Carnahan on a broomstick and call her Hillary...

I saw one attacking Talent last night, that NEVER mentioned his party...

That's a REAL bad sign for DEMOCRATS. When you don't WANT the opposing candidate linked to the Republican Party while you are tarring and feathering him/her/it...
