“Civil marriage is a civil right and a matter of civil law," Jealous [NAACP President & CEO] said. "The NAACP’s support for marriage equality is deeply rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution and equal protection of all people."

“The mission of the NAACP has always been to ensure the political, social and economic equality of all people,” Brock added. “We have and will oppose efforts to codify discrimination into law.”

I am glad. Last polls I saw have almost 60% of blacks supporting same sex marriage, and Obama might be partially responsible for that. I think my biggest sadness has to be the black churches that take the conservative stand on this, many of which were instrumental in the civil rights struggle and in overturning interracial marriage bans. More importantly, it is more then a bit idiotic to take the stand that they are trying to protect marriage, the sacred institution of marriage, when their own community has so many issues with single mothers and a not great track record on marriage, it seems to me that denying two people who want to commit to each other and wanting to deny them that while turning a blind eye to the very real issues with marriage that need addressing is pretty sad. I don't know if it makes them feel better about themselves or their faith if they do this, but it seems to me to be a case of the old statement in the bible, about judging your neighbor for the mote in their eye when you have a log in yours.
