Do you lament the passing of good manners?
I'm of the old school in such things.

I open doors for those of the fairer sex, or for anyone following, come to that.
I always try to be polite.

Are people not being taught good manners nowadays?

I am a product of the 60s. My parents were products of the 40's. Yes Kendo. Amongst straight, gays and lesbians or others of good culture, there are still good manners. However, as a young looking 40 year old? No teen gets out of my way unless I YELL - EXCUSE ME, YOU FUCK. lol

Enter the ASBO.
Antisocial Behaviour Order.

We used to get a cuff around the ear when we transgressed.

If you tell someone off nowadays you get a knife in your guts.

It helps to have broad shoulders.
I tend to tense my shoulders so that brats bounce off me.

ASBO's are part of British life now.

You will not do 'that' or 'this' will happen to you.

What are good manners for men or women in any country? I am certainly interested.

Words to that effect..

''Hello, it's a pleasure to meet you'' she said.

''The pleasure is all mine'' he replied.

''It's rather crowded in here, wouldn't you say?'' she asked.

''Would you rather be on a desert island?''

''No. There'd be no chance of bumping into you then,'' she said with a smile.

(Interlude)

''Good manners cost nothing, you know'' he said, shifting his stance.

''I'm sorry, did you just say something?''

There's a good one and I would say it warrents a go fuck off.

Be serious. MANNERS not quotes. MANNERS. (manners are made of actions, not dialogue quotes from stories).

Google the word etiquette. I'm sure you'll find something. Now, you can fuck off.

You missed the point, friend. MANNERS ARE ACTIONS NOT WORDS OR DIALOGUE.. ;)

If I open the door for a lady today, I'm just as likely to be met with a "thank you" as with a "what, do you think I'm fucking handicapped?!"

Manners change with the rest of the culture. Means new things to new generations. I'd say it's more geared towartds individualization these days, and less a mandatory collective pattern of behaviour.

Ladies and men open doors for me, I am likely to say thank you and open doors for others male or female. If they say smarmy things to me or you? You keep doing it because THAT is etiquette. ;) That IS confidence.

Different cultures have different ideas about what's considered proper etiquette and manners. I lived in Holland and from what I observed, it wasn't the same; men didn't open doors for me, people pushed me with their shopping carts to nudge me out of their way in the aisle of the grocery store ..**** stuff like that. You adapt, I guess, but it still felt strange. On the flip side, I often heard the Dutch say that Americans were "too polite."

I use manners as often as I can remember to. I open doors for everyone, I speak politely, I ask for things instead of taking them, and so on and so forth.

I really love being polite when someone is trying to pick a fight with me. That pisses them off so much :D

I hear Candians are worse than Americans on the polite scale.

Alright, call me pathetic but there's a commercial on the past couple weeks that gives me warm fuzzies. I think it's for an insurance company or something. Starts with a guy picking up a stuffed toy that a kid in a stroller has dropped. Somebody sees him do that and it inspires them to do something kind for someone else. The chain goes on for quite a few people. I'm a sap but I like that commercial.
