GM closing 5 plants

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors will lay off up to 14,000 factory and white-collar workers in North America and put five plants up for possible closure as it restructures to cut costs and focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles.

The reduction includes 8,100 white-collar workers, some of whom will take buyouts and others who will be laid off. Some U.S. factory workers could transfer to truck or SUV factories that are increasing production.

Most of the affected factories build cars that won't be sold in the U.S. after next year, including the Chevrolet Volt rechargeable gas-electric hybrid. They could close or they could get different vehicles to build. Their futures will be part of contract talks with the United Auto Workers union next year.

The salaried reductions amount to 15 percent of GM's North American white-collar workforce of 54,000. At the factories, 3,000 workers could lose jobs in Canada and another 3,600 in the U.S.

Those Trump tarrifs are working just as planned. Trade wars are easily when you're a millionaire.

From a business perspective...it is very smart. How they implemented it...telling people before Xmas...fucking bullshit.

I wonder what the suicide rate will be for those families around Christmas time.

Too many. This could have been stretched out over years...and should have been. Like I said, the decision is a smart one...but how they implemented it is just wrong on every level.

Yep, as the price of government mandated cars go up market share comes down, thus a diminishing return on investment..

I can't believe they squandered the Obama bailout. They should be #1 and kicking ass.

Most likely but the historic little bitch had to be so very extra about it.

He has no clue what he is talking about. The plants being closed made sedans. People aren't buying sedans. The govt has nothing to do w this.

BMW and Tesla announced plans to invest and build plants in China earlier this year, moving some production from the States (North Carolina for BMW, California for Tesla) to China.

Both companies referenced Trump’s imposition of tariffs, and China easing of foreign ownership restrictions and joint venture requirements, in their announcements.

China is potentially one of the worlds largest markets for electric cars.

Yeaaaaah, but...the gubmint has all the optics on the rise or fall of major industry businesses in the country, because the gubmint is the ultimate DJ spinning the tunes that control the country's party flow. And when the head dude of said gubmint kept telling you that you'd be winning if you voted for him but it turns out inside of two years after the fact that you're not winning and he never really gave a shit, well...

Nice sarcastic touch there Libsam. :)

Yes, that Obama bailout came with conditions, those being that GM start building the very type of auto's that they're shuttering the plants that manufacture them. Leading the way to a "green tomorrow." Car guys build cars, politicians and bean counters not so much.

Ford and Fiat-Chrysler are also taking deep bites out of white collar/management they just have been a little more low key about it.

Yeah it's kind of a nothing story. Streamlining a business is all. Sucks to be out of work but business gotta business.

Except for the fact that the cost in real dollars for the average car is trending downward, you'd be right.

Vette has been asked a few times what he means by "government mandated car" and has yet to say so I gotta figure it's some kind of Vette conspiracy thing like the moon landing, Obamas birth certificate and Trump isn't crooked.
