Time had passed with ease, it became easy for Darius to forget who they really were. There was no palace here, no guards, no servants, nothing to bring them to the truth. He could picture her as his wife, his beautiful and loving wife as she worked books while he smashed horse shoes into shape with the hammer and tongs.
She would come out and bring him a cup of cold water or sometimes ale depending on how playful she felt. He began to use salt in his cooking and the food was better for it.
They had begun to sleep together in the same bed every night. Though they remained mostly dressed, they held each other all night in an embrace that couldn't be any more comfortable.
One Sunday she woke him gently, her hand running over his chest. He blinked and looked at her, the words she had spoken not quite sinking in. "I'm awake." He said slowly, "Wait what did you say?"
