Just a short question that I can't seem to Google up an answer for...
How does 'Guantanamo Bay Naval Base' abbrevate into Gitmo, or GTMO, as it were?

Best explanation I have found is this, and it doesn't give me much of an answer:
GITMO - Guantanamo Bay Cuba (US Navy; usually seen as GTMO)

I'm thinking it doesn't abbreviate, but is just a shortened form of 'Guantanamo'. But don't know, just my thoughts.

I've always assumed that it was an shortened form, like Mke is the short form of Milwaukee and Mpls is short for Minneapolis.

*shivers knowing what happens at Gitmo*

It's the same logic as that which makes the Devonport Naval Base "Guzz" and the Portsmouth one "Pompey".
