Has anyone ever used this program? If so, I'd welcome any/all/some help.

Thanks,
DGO

I used to use the Gimp, about 5 years ago. I've since switched to Photoshop, and probably don't remember anything much about it. Shoot me a PM with your questions, and I'll see if I can answer any of them.

have you got linux going on that machine?

No, it's not a linux machine. I was looking for free software for my students and someone suggested GIMP.

I use Photoshop and Fireworks, but I was looking for a free program for my students. Just the download instructions will turn most of them off.

With Linux going. .on 3 machines... I have used it secondary to Photoshop.. but use it for some of the plugins.... Pm and I will also see if throw my 2cents in....

I use Suse and run Photoshop out from under Linux.. so I am on photoshop 7.. under Suse 9.1 pro....

Just how much "manipulation" do your students need to do with images?

IrfanView is freeware and very good at format conversions, cropping, resizing, color corrections, and some very basic editing functions -- like adding text and C&P graphics.

I's actually more of an image management program than an image manipulation program, but it might serve your purpose if the program is needed more for formatting pictures than complex modifications.

Download is simple: Click on www.irfanview.com and then click on download.

Another option might be PaintShop Pro -- it's NOT free, but you might be able to negotiate a student discount with JASC Sotware at www.JASC.com

PaintShop Pro can do almost everything Adobe's PhotoShop and PhotoDeluxe can do to an image for only $125 list price. Their normal trial version will only work for thirty to sixty days, but they might be willing to provide a "one year student trial" version.

Thanks for your reply. I had forgotten about irfanview. I have not used it in a long time. I'll take another look.

PaintShop Pro's trial version is another option. It's possible that some parents will purchase the program after they see a reason.

Thanks again.

I've used gimp for years. It improves daily. I haven't used Photoshop for some time but I doubt that anyone who uses photoshop would have much of a learning curve for gimp or vice-versa. If you plan to use both you can save images in gimp to the photoshop proprietary format and go back and forth with gimp and photoshop.

You might want to take a look at http://gimp.org/tutorials/ and the other information on the site.

Good luck
