Gift certificate, or present?

My daughter prefers cash. So, thats what I give her. She goes to freaky specialty shops way down town, so it works best for her.

Most young people prefer cash. Gift cards limit where they can shop, and apparently no one appreciates a gift anymore unless its a plasma screen tv or something.

Im amazed at how ungrateful some people are.

Iam always grateful for whatever gift I may receive. Its nice to be thought of. But I suppose some people dont view it that way.

Here are the DJ Rules for Giving:

1. If I'm sleeping with you, or want to sleep with you, you get something very personal and thoughtful.

2. If you are my off-spring that is hyper-sensitive about where you get your clothes from, you get a gift card for that store.

3. If you are a relative under 18, you get an AMEX gift card to spend as you see fit.

4. All others get a bottle of wine (the price of the wine places you in a certian pecking order (i.e. if I don't really like you that much you get Mad Dog 20/20))

neither - i prefer the company of good friends and family as my gift.
i think we have forgotten what chrissy is supposed to be about...
too many people place way too much emphasis on the gift, rather than the spirit of the season.

I want a plasma screen TV. Too bad I need all the other crap to make it work...

Exactly, and she's not exactly sure which of the stores she will find what she wants in.

I think a lot of people still appreciate many gifts that aren't plasma t.v's. :)

I either hand make gifts or do something specialized, so if someone doesn't like it, then too bad. It's always something usable. I don't believe in more clutter. Functional or expendable. Everything else can go by the wayside.

I'm like DJ, though. It depends on who it is what would be appropriate. I'm also agree with Batchoohus - a gift certificate to a book store is much better than a book. I might have the book, or have read the book. Also, I'm a voracious reader so books are always appropriate.

Last year, the sister-in-laws mother gave us a gift certificate to Wal-Mart. Now, I know most of you don't know my politics on this, but Wal-Mart is not a place I willingly frequent. But it was money already spent. And the son got one, too. So, in November, we went to Wal-Mart for the 3rd time in our lives. The son got a video game and we got a telescoping window washer and some sundry cleaning products. I felt dirty...

I agree, I don't like clutter either. Thats why I prefer a gift card, I get what I want and those are things I use.

Dirty hey? well, like said the money was already spent.

I like your rules. :)

Thats when ideally I would like two gifts, one personal and one a bit less personal, gift card. When its someone I'm sleeping with, or want to sleep with. :)
