I went through several banana magazines against those guys down below. When the carbine clicked, it became instinct to just rip it out and slam another one in. Directly below me were our vehicles. Several guards made runs to get to them to either steal or get on that .50. Each time they were shot down. There were many bodies scattered around them, couldn't count them all as the rush battle was so consuming. Scarlett was hoping from corner to corner, firing her M1 Garand at anything she could see. If someone was cowering behind cover, she would throw a grenade onto them. Terrific bangs rattled the face of the building until one guttural one shook us to the building's foundation.
"What was that?" I called out.
"I don't know" Scarlett replied. "It came from inside the building." She tried to hail Toxic or Blowtorch, still nothing on the radio. "Damn. If this keeps up, we may have to go in there and find them."
Finally, there was a faint voice in the static. "We got Duke!" It was coming from Toxic as they climbed the stairs.
"YES!" screamed Scarlett more out of emotion rather than connection to Duke. This meant that Toxic and Blowtorch were also alive. "We got the roof secured. Head to the vehicles and we'll join you."
"Right!" Toxic replied.
"Come on, Kid! We're out of here!" Scarlett shouted. Being so caught up in the fight, she had to grab my shoulder and pull me away to get me to follow her. I don't know where Baroness got her people from, but there were a lot of them. We shot down many in our rooftop defense and yet there were more and more coming out of the woodwork. It might take an aerial bomb or some napalm to clear this area of some many targets.
Getting to the stairwell, we skipped three to four steps at a time, jumping to the landings. There was black smoke rolling up the walls. We coughed but forced our way through it as with each step the smoke thickened.
What we didn't know was, that trap Baroness had laid was caused several small fires in the basement. Unchecked they formed together to make one large fire and was eating away at anything flammable. Now it was spreading to the rafters, fed by the air flowing through the open stairwells.
The five of us met on the ground floor just inside the main door. Rounds continued to crack outside. "Duke! You okay?" asked Scarlett as she saw the man limp, suspended on the shoulders of his teammates. "What happened to him?"
"I don't know" responded Blowtorch. "We'll figure it out later. Let's get the hell out of here!"
Scarlett and I led the way. We came out weapons blazing. A round went through the sleeve of my blouse and came out the elbow. Didn't hurt me. Another hit my bag and broke several empty magazines. We reached our Jeep and I climbed onto the .50 cal, slapped in another belt, and went to work firing in bursts at everything around us.
The people around us were yelling in a mixture of English and Jordanian that was difficult for us to interpret. Were they locals or foreign mercenaries?
Rather than being gentle, Blowtoch and Toxic had to shove Duke into the backseat. That's when he came back, screaming from the pain.
