Ghost stories

Hang on!!

I'll go to my OWN room but you make it sound like we have to share one.
If that's the case I'm bringing BOTH of my cats AND my clown make up. :D

I'm Southern born and raised and it seems like there are more people who are comfortable with spirits (from the beyond not the bottle) in this part of the country. Have any of you found that to be the case?

I'm in upstate, a very old city with a high concentration of Polish, Irish, Hungarian, and Italian immigrants. We're comfortable telling the ghost stories, always have

Pun intended?

I know that New Orleans is very open to the supernatural, but that brings a couple of things to mind - their heritage and also the fact that New Orleans is just a very old city with lots of history. It makes sense that the more tragedies a city has endured, the more it will be exposed to supernatural occurrences.

I mentioned my hometown early in the thread. We have quite a few fascinating stories from the Civil War. Most of the Civil War was fought on Southern soil, so that makes sense too. I'm sure that if we researched it, we could find numerous instances of supernatural occurrences in historical cities such as those involved in the Civil and Revolutionary Wars.

Then there's always the argument that some will make that Southern people aren't as intelligent so we're bound to be more open to "nonsense." Call me uneducated as much as you want; I'll begin working on my doctorate within the next year or so. *shrugs*

Here in my city, we have many stories and legends, from the Mohicans/Mahicans to the Dutch trappers and traders, to the early immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. My grandmother, though born on a reservation that borders New York, Ontario, and Quebec, told the grandkids about spirits the were seen in what's now the city, right before the French and Dutch trappers "discovered" it.

Do you remember any of them?

Will you tell us some of them? Kal wants to stay awake all night again. :D
Oh yeah.

Hey, BeachMomma, would you be against me writing a story of my own and sharing it with you ladies and gentlemen here?

Beach, I'll be working on the family ghost stories this weekend, as I sit during an estate sale. I'm bringing the notebook and pen, and phone has Yahoo messenger on it, so I'll bother some people with the spookiness

Absolutely! Go right ahead! This thread is open to anybody's stories, real, imagined, or fictional. As long as they aren't about clowns.

:D

If you bother me, don't expect a response right away. I'll be at work. Yippee. </sarcasm>

Thanks! It's about time for good ghost stories! Who's going to the store for ingredients for S'mores, and who's gonna chop wood for the fire?

No, no clown stories, but I do have a couple that involve redheads..oh wait, those are for OTHER threads

Speaking of links, my story still hasn't been published. *sighs*

I've noticed that the non-contest stories are longer to be approved. Too many writers and not enough editors I guess.

I didn't have time to do any ghost story note taking this morning at the estate slate. For the first 2 hours, we were busier than shit! Earned enough for us to be surprised. Then someone can in and offered $1500 for the rest of the stuff!

I was supposed to be there 9-3 today, 9-2 tomorrow. We were out of there by 1

Oh! The fire is alive again and people are going to tell new ghostly stories!

*drops some wood, takes a seat and puts wrapped apples into the fire*

I have many stories I could tell, from my Polish great-grandmother and my Akwesasne Mohawk grandmother, to the reality that is living in a house with many ghosts and spirits....

The only stories I have about strange things I told here already. I would love to hear some more!

Something my mom told me the other day, not a story, just something strange: Her grandfather could heal pigs by laying his hand on their head and saying a prayer to Saint Barbara. Only pigs. No cows or other livestock and no humans.

I found 4 complete Halloween and ghost stories on a flash drive!! I should be working on them, editing them for Lit or maybe for PAY publication!

Congrats! I should've saved my story for whatever Halloween contest, but I didn't think about it in time.

Wrapped apples? How do you make them? Just wrap them in aluminum foil and put them on the fire? Do you do anything else to them? That sounds so yummy!

Ah I've heard a ton of ghost stories in my time from people, but I've never experienced them myself. Chinese people believe that certain people are born with the ability to see ghosts - those people can communicate and interact with ghosts like they are normal people. I actually have a friend who had this but as a child she kept freaking out and screaming all the time because she was seeing ghosts constantly and not understanding what they were. Eventually her parents took her to see a Chinese mystic (not sure what else to describe them as - basically people who are also in tune with the spirit world and know rituals etc) to take away her ability to see ghosts. The mystic performed a ritual which was successful, and she hasn't seen any ghosts since.

Awww, poor thing. So kinda like the kid in that movie? Sixth Sense? Yeah, I can see how that would freak ya out.

Yes exactly like that. Not sure why I didn't make the connection earlier! And here's me wondering how to explain it to other people

Truth usually is stranger than fiction. I've seen things happen that nobody could possibly dream up. Hollywood can take ideas from truth, but they'll never be able to compete with it.

I have to think of which one to submit to the Halloween contest, which ones to submit to the interwebs
