get an avatar?

Hey, how did you get your avatar without 100 posts?!? Now I'm really jealous!! LOL

I took it down and now I can't get it back.

Just after the upgrade, it was possible for members with less than 100 posts to add an AV and a great access was allowed. As time has goen on, the old restrictions have come back. 100 is the typical number for an AV but it also might have something to do with when the system updates as to when you are permitted to get your AV. I heard of several people who had the number of posts but were unable to get AVs until a while later.

Thanks! That makes me feel better I'm actually almost there myself now. I'm so excited but I know I may have a problem for a day or two as I've also talked to others who've had to wait. I suppose I will survive it LOL

The excitement is contageous. It almost makes me want to post something of very little relevance just in increase my posts.. but I would never do that.

I'm at 100, still no option. Tried refreshing, still has "no av" selected. Very frustrating. Think I'll try IE as opposed to Firefox, perhaps that's the glitch. =/

I never understood that rule. I love lit but I don't post often. I'm a 33 year old woman who would rather just let it sink in. A lot of it is entertaining and informative but I rarely find the need to post. So I've been a member how long? Over two years anyway. But yet I'm not allowed an avatar. I'm one of the lucky ones that was able to sneak one in (although I didn't realize I was being sneaky, simply thought they finally changed the rule).

I never understood that rule.

The avatar datbase puts a heavy load on both the server and the bandwidth used.

Setting a minimum post limit reduces the size of the database by limiting avatars to people who are a "part of the community" rather than hit-and-run posters -- like the spammers who drop in, post a dozen or so links to their site and vanish forever. There's little to be gained by loading up the database and bandwidth with avatars for people who don't actually participate in the "community."

Here is a follow up question, i just realised i can have an av. But i was wondering if anyone had any good places to find LEGAL art to put in it. I havent done any research yet i would guess a google search would turn up something, but i was thinking someone might have a better idea.

I dont know why but i dont realy want one of my pics as an av. And i am too lazy to create my own.

There are sites that have nothing but "avatars" that are free for use by anyone. They're usually smaller than Lit permits and terribly unoriginal IMHO.

There is some question whether using a "thumbnail" of a copyrighted image falls under the "fair use" provisions of Copyright law or not, but I've not heard of that being a problem on a practical level.

I do know of several people who have avatars based on copyrighted works that have the express permission of the copyright holder and I don't know of anyone who has asked and been denied permission to use what amounts to a thumbnail as an avatar.

The only way to be absolutely sure that your avatar is "legal" is to create it yourself or get explicit permission from the copyright holder -- when the copyright holder can actually be determined, that is.

I'm fairly certain that a digitized version of something that is clearly in the public domain -- like the Mona Lisa is also in the Public Domain -- so the classics should be safe to use.
