Georgia Roll Call!!!!!

Ah, but the creature that has invaded our space and is likely plotting our downfall is not an actual lady bug. No, *real* lady bugs are kind and gentle, and well behaved, and don't STINK. This daemonic imposter is the Multicolored Asian Ladybird Beetle, introduced for natural pest control, and like all poorly-thought-out plans (frogs in Australia, anyone?), has ended badly. Stooopid scientists.

Oh wow.... I had no idea!

I am a veritable font of useless information. :D

Ok, plus I'm allergic to the darn things. Not the kind, gentle ones. Just the daemonic ones.

A person with no information at all is useless....

How in the heck is someone allergic to bugs???

Frustratingly, I appear to be allergic to *everything* down here, not just the bugs.

MALBs engage in what is pleasantly referred to as reflex bleeding.. if you threaten them, they bleed from their leg joints. It's yellow-orangish, stains EVERYTHING it comes into contact with, and smells horrible. It's designed to keep predators from eating them (I can see where it would most definitely work..), but folks with asthma or contact-type allergies can have a reaction to it. It's the same theory as how people can be allergic to roaches.

It's obviously different from being allergic to wasps/bees/ants (all of which are on my 'no-no' list as well- my allergist was horrified when he learned I'd been working outside without an epi-pen for several years)- MALBs bite but can't really break the skin, whereas the other creepy-crawlies sting or bite and release venom into the victim. For someone who's allergic the reaction is different too- typically exposure to MALBs will produce a slight asthma attack or contact dermatitis, but the reaction is rarely severe. Wasps/bees/ants can put someone in the hospital on a good day, and in the ground on a bad one.

I can also tell you why you wrap a coral snake bite, but not a rattlesnake/copperhead/cottonmouth bite, if you're interested. :)

*chin resting on hands* Oh wow... an encyclopedia..... do you have a show on the Discovery channel? lol

Seriously... i'm sorry for your allergies... are you gonna have to live in a bubble here in Georgia...

Not yet.. but Mike Rowe is *totally* my TV boyfriend. YUM. LOL.

That was the original plan, but they're much more difficult to roll around in then those hamsters lead you to believe.. sneaky rodents. So we went with drugs instead- lots and lots of them. And so far it seems to be working, so I have one less thing to curse about.

The heat, on the other hand, still receives my full and frequent wrath. :D Fourteen years in, you'd think my blood would've thinned out by now, but nooooooo.

Leanansidhe,

What part of GA are you in?

You caught my attention primarily because I happen to own the very issue that your profile picture comes from. :)

Ok when did Atlanta become Atlantis? Any more of this rain, and there won't be enough water in the air for snow when winter comes. We need SNOW!

Just think a couple of years everyone was complaining about the lack of rain.

And a high-five to the *other* fellow geek! :D

I work in NW-ish Georgia, near the Rome area, but live just over the line in AL (shhhhhhh- don't tell anyone!).

Sorry folks, but I'm *loving* this weather! Probably 'cause I live on top of a mountain and don't have to worry too much about flooding. The wind is just amazing up here!

Welcome to another rainy day in good ole ATL. Seriously, when does this shit stop. Us people from drier climates cant take much more of this!

J

Hey Jay P, it has rained just about nonstop since I moved here. I got here right when all the flooding crap started and it just seems like its rainy with spots of sunshine here so far.
