(This has nothing to do with Amateur Pictures or photography in any way, but since I post here more often than any other forum I figured this would be as good a place as any.)

Today I tried my hand at geocaching for the first time and found it fun and exciting. I'm on vacation visiting family and it was an opportunity to get my folks out of the house doing something we could all participate in.

For those who may not know, geocaching is a modern technological sport in which you use a GPS receiver to find hidden items (caches) placed by other geocachers and logged on the web site geocaching.com. They are often creatively hidden and it takes a keen eye and sometimes a bit of patience to find the hides, but you can be rewarded with anything from a small canister with only a log to sign up to a large box or chest with all kinds of family-friendly goodies. If you take something you're encouraged to leave behind something for future finds.

Today we found five caches out of nine attempts (sometimes the caches are missing or have been neglected for so long that they have been removed by cleaning crews) and I got the chance to rescue a geocoin (small trackable coin placed by another cacher and given a "mission" to travel by way of other cachers moving it from one location to another) from a stagnant cache. I'll take the coin back to Miami and give it a new lease on life in a cache back home.

So, has anyone else tried this? Are you an active member of geocaching.com? How often do you go out? Let's hear your stories!
