Gender preferences in erotic reading?

As I look at all of the stories on this site my mind boggles at the sheer diversity of sexual interests among human beings.
It does strike me that there may very well be differences between what men prefer to read and what women prefer to read when it comes to erotic literature.
What generalizations would you make about the differences between what women want from erotic literature and what men want?

generalizations?

In the literature they read, just like in real life, I think males are very visual and descriptive. They like to read "how" women look, "how" the sex acts look etc. I think females, also as in real life, are more into feelings, imagination, and talking. In reading a story they want description of what is being said between characters, thoughts, and details of how things make the characters feel.

I learned in a college human sexuality class that the reason females are so much more often depicted in movies etc. than males is that female sexuality turns on both the male and female audience. Males are visual and want to see women; women who see women imagine themselves as the woman in the scene or whatever. Thus using females more targets the entire market. I think the same happens with erotic writing the guys want to read about women and when women read about women they put themselves into the role.

Those are just a couple of observations...maybe more later.

For a stereotypicalization, men want a good description of what's going on. Women want a good description of what is going on and how everyone is feeling about it. Most people want character development. Some people want plot development. Some people just want to read the sex part. The last three statements are totally gender neutral.

Hey LAUREL! Are you allowed to disclose member ratio of men to women? I'm guessing that more women are on this site than men, because, as Muffin said, men want description, so obviously they want to "see" it, so my guess is that some men pass this site by, looking for a video feed, so they don't have to read something for a while before they get off. Women are definitely more emotional, and I think that when a woman likes a story, it usually has to do with the amount of emotion in it. I always become rather attached to a well-written character who experiences emotions that are familiar to all women when it comes to sex, and that might be the sense of love, or atleast wantoness.

Hey Myst,

What you say may very well be true, but I for one am a male who gets far more from reading a well written erotic story than I ever would from a video feed, or picture. To me nothing is more erotic than the mental stimulation I get from being able to immerse myself in a story.

Of course I also love giving oral sex to a woman, so maybe I'm not so typical a male :)

LOL, maybe I should qualify that...

A stereotypical man likes to build a picture of what the people are doing and what they look like in his mind. A stereotypical woman likes to build a picture of what they people are feeling when they're doing what they're doing in her mind.

The problem with stereotypes is that they aren't very true.

Muffin, I guess I would agree with that for the most part! I'll try to include more of the emotional, feeling part in my stories from now on.

If there really are more women on this site than men then maybe this will even raise my ratings some :)

who reads here

I just read a response by Laurel to a different question. In it she said that men and women on this site are about equal. A more interesting question would be, what do catagories do they each read? And do they vote differently to the same story?
