Hi all,

How do you fancy posters manage to quote more than one other post in a reply? I've seen it done multiple times, but the only way I know to quote a post is to hit the quote button and then once I'm in the window typing my reply I don't see how to quote another one.

Thanks!

this is actually pretty simple. here's how you do it.

[ quote ] just copy & paste the text you want in the middle between these 2 commands in brackets. o yeah, remove the extra spaces, too, around the quote and/quote bits. i'm including them here so you can see it: if i didn't you wouldn't be able to see the appropriate commands.[/ quote ]

to get someone's specific name to appear, you add, after the [ quote ] command, that person's name. i usually use the [ b ] and [ /b ] commands to set that person's name apart, as i did above.

as for doing it multiple times, you just repeat the process for each bit of text you wanna quote in your post.

anyway, i hope that helps. :>

Silverwhisper told me: this is actually pretty simple. here's how you do it.

And I believe he's right!

Thanks a million!

And Scalywag too! Ed's right. It's not hard to do but just takes a little editing. there is no button to click to do multiple quotes in a single post (at least not any that I know of)

Thanks guys!

no problem, vanelane. when you've spent literally years working with a given forum software, you learn a trick or two. :>

edit: scaly, there isn't. but then again, this goes right to the command line/GUI argument. :>

Gui?

GUI - Is that the feeling of the liquids after good sex?
And, I liked Willow. I think I remember that quote. She was always given cool lines to say. And when filming that famous sex after the flute comment in American Pie, After many takes, she yelled out, "What's my name, bitch!"

Let me know if you want a nice fake of her.

damn, magic fingers, don't tell me that's a fake! leave me my happy little delusions!

[ahem]

GUI: sadly, no, it's an IT abbrevation for "graphical user interface", referring to the practice of using your mouse to point at things to make your computer do stuff, rather than the early days when you had to type commands into what became known as a command line.

[/geeky]

o, and thanks for that story about how that quote wound up in the movie. i always loved that line. :>

If you hit the quote button on the first post you want to quote from, edit he quote down to the essentials and reply, then highlight and copy the text to the clipboard, you can hit the back buton instead of submit

Then hit the quote buton for the next post youwant to quote and paste the reply to the first post into the reply to the second post.

It's not one button, but it's a series of buttons that will format quotes from multiple posts into a single reply.

Without the leading and trailing square brackets, that last quote looks like this:

QUOTE=silverwhisper]to get someone's specific name to appear, you add, after the [ quote ] command, that person's name. i usually use the [ b ] and [ /b ] commands to set that person's name apart, as i did above.[/QUOTE

The "=silverwhisper" gets translated by the software as "Originally posted by silverwhisper" with the italics and bold added automatically.

It's easiest to do multiple quotes in a post by copying text from the thread summary below the reply box, pasting and highlighting it and hitting the quote button
quote.gif
to wrap thehihglighted text in the quote tags. Adding "=poster" inside the first quote tag to identify who you're quoting is optional, but simple.

To break up a long quote into smaller quotes, I usually:

Hit the Quote buton to get the full text of the post quoted.

Copy the initial Quote tag -- making sure I get the square brackets.

Paste the initial quote tag at the bottom of the post -- just below the close-quote tag.

Copy both tags to the clipboard.

Use CTL-Z to undo the paste at the bottom of the post.

Where I need to break up the quote I just paste the close quote-tag and open-quote tag I copied from the bottom of the post. Then I make sure that my comments are between the tags I just pasted.

And I believe he's right!

To nest quotes, like above, just copy paste the text, highlight the inside inside quote and hit the quote icon, then highlight the entire text -- including the quote tags for the inside quote -- and hit the quote icon again. Copy or type the names inside the quote tag with an equal sign -- i.e. "=vanelane" --to identify who you're quoting as required.

Or just use Mozilla Firefox and open the thread in multiple tabs then quote and cut and paste each bit you want, (this is my personally preferred method).

I don't quite understand this one. Elaborate please.

In Firefox when you click Ctrl T, a new tabbed window appears and you now have two windows open on your desk and you can move between by clicking on the tab at the top of each page.

If I want to make multiple quotes in a single reply, I bookmark the thread, as I open new tabs I open that bookmark and scroll down to the part I want to quote, I click the quote for that part, then as the page refreshes to the quoted section cut and paste the part I want into the first page I opened.

Now I can either use the back button on the second open page and move to the next quote and do it all again, or I can Ctrl T and open another page to look for the next quote, this is the way I do it especially if I want to make an additional quote from a different thread altogether.

firefox is good. i prefer opera b/c it seems to require less system resources and it too offers tabbed browsing, but yeah, what ezzy said is certainly do-able.

Actually, I like to talk about my biggest organ. (It's not my brain...)

It's about 6' (feet) long and a good 4' around! It's firm and soft to the touch, sensitive, nice to hold, is warm and comfortable.
What is it?
