Here's my take on the next gen systems (I'm not being a fanboy, I have no allegance to any one system, it's just that this is /my/ analisys):
Wii: The gameplay looks like it's going to be fun, the graphics aren'tquite up to PS3/360 standerds though. That being said they have the right price point ($250 officially now), fun gameplay (which is the main concern, the graphics don't have to be phenominal if the gameplay is a blast), and lastly Nintendo ALWAYS does a great job with price drops (you can get a gamecube for $129 or less now).
Bottom line: Look for Nintendo to take over the number #2 spot in the console market, but they also need to focus a little more on the core gamer market segment.
360: They're looking good for the moment, they've seemed to get by the shortage issues and the overheating problems with the initial units and are starting to put out content. The true next-gen games are starting to come down the pipe with games like rockstars table tennis game, Forza 2, and others. And the big halo 3 admission was made. M$ is looking good but they need to stay on their toes.
Bottom line: M$ can take over the #1 spot in the console market, but holding off Nintendo could be a bit of a challenge if Nintendo plays their cards right.
PS3: Sony (not just their entertainment division) has made some bad decisions lately and they're dropping the ball. They're graphics look good, they look VERY good, but after the rootkit fiasco other divisions have not stepped up to the plate and attempted to overcome the bad taste in everyones mouth. Sony has not completly lost but they're not sitting in a good position either. Some of they're technology seems to be haphazardly implemented (i.e. the intertial aspects of the controller) and seem to be getting lukewarm reviews. And they're bad decisions in the handling of media management led to MANY gamers accusations of copying Nintendo's UI ideas...
Bottom line: All in all Sony has three main issues they need to overcome in order to become truly competitive in the console market again:
1. Realize that they need to woo the "On-the-fence-core-gamer" market as well as the "lets-buy-the-kids-one-for-christmas" market. A (minimum) $500 price point doesn't do that, and don't forget the extra controllers, memory cards, games and other goodies that need to be purchased with that console!
2. Realize that if you are going to release two different console levels be sure that the "core" can be upgraded completly to the "premium" through the purchase of accesories. The "core" PS3 (or whatever they call it) lacks HDMI output, which is something that cannot be added to the system later on.
3. Over come their image issues by being willing to take a loss on the price of a good console in order to get would of mouth, or being a little less stringent on the DRM issue (I'll laugh at myself for that one...it's never gonna happen).
Final word: I'll say it again: I have no alegince(sp) to any of the three systems however I think the ALL of their strengthbs and weaknesses. I do own a 360 though for the record...
EDIT: CRAP! that was a long post....
