Geeks for Geeks...

Here's my take on the next gen systems (I'm not being a fanboy, I have no allegance to any one system, it's just that this is /my/ analisys):

Wii: The gameplay looks like it's going to be fun, the graphics aren'tquite up to PS3/360 standerds though. That being said they have the right price point ($250 officially now), fun gameplay (which is the main concern, the graphics don't have to be phenominal if the gameplay is a blast), and lastly Nintendo ALWAYS does a great job with price drops (you can get a gamecube for $129 or less now).
Bottom line: Look for Nintendo to take over the number #2 spot in the console market, but they also need to focus a little more on the core gamer market segment.

360: They're looking good for the moment, they've seemed to get by the shortage issues and the overheating problems with the initial units and are starting to put out content. The true next-gen games are starting to come down the pipe with games like rockstars table tennis game, Forza 2, and others. And the big halo 3 admission was made. M$ is looking good but they need to stay on their toes.
Bottom line: M$ can take over the #1 spot in the console market, but holding off Nintendo could be a bit of a challenge if Nintendo plays their cards right.

PS3: Sony (not just their entertainment division) has made some bad decisions lately and they're dropping the ball. They're graphics look good, they look VERY good, but after the rootkit fiasco other divisions have not stepped up to the plate and attempted to overcome the bad taste in everyones mouth. Sony has not completly lost but they're not sitting in a good position either. Some of they're technology seems to be haphazardly implemented (i.e. the intertial aspects of the controller) and seem to be getting lukewarm reviews. And they're bad decisions in the handling of media management led to MANY gamers accusations of copying Nintendo's UI ideas...
Bottom line: All in all Sony has three main issues they need to overcome in order to become truly competitive in the console market again:
1. Realize that they need to woo the "On-the-fence-core-gamer" market as well as the "lets-buy-the-kids-one-for-christmas" market. A (minimum) $500 price point doesn't do that, and don't forget the extra controllers, memory cards, games and other goodies that need to be purchased with that console!

2. Realize that if you are going to release two different console levels be sure that the "core" can be upgraded completly to the "premium" through the purchase of accesories. The "core" PS3 (or whatever they call it) lacks HDMI output, which is something that cannot be added to the system later on.

3. Over come their image issues by being willing to take a loss on the price of a good console in order to get would of mouth, or being a little less stringent on the DRM issue (I'll laugh at myself for that one...it's never gonna happen).

Final word: I'll say it again: I have no alegince(sp) to any of the three systems however I think the ALL of their strengthbs and weaknesses. I do own a 360 though for the record...

EDIT: CRAP! that was a long post....

i'll wait for the price to drop to a sane level. in the meantime, Revolution, and possibly 360 for DoA4 and PD0

I wasn't impressed with PD0....

I didn't think it was bad, it just lacked.......something.

I wish I could describe it better

heh....how was the original then?

the graphics sucked....the controller kept breaking on me....and it had 1 good game that i remember (Zelda:OOT)

awww, come on... the games werent that bad... I loved the controller (till it broke).... and graphics arent as important as gameplay to me.....

I should go dig my N64 out of the garage..........

meh....there's also the fact that you needed a graphix upgrade to play most games

In all fairness there were some truly horrible games (pokemon snap anyone?)

but most were pretty good!

my Gamecube games will be with me for life <<

Smash Brothers Melee will, forever, have a place in my heart.
Right next to Mega Man, Solid Snake, and Final Fantasy.

Metroid Prime was awesome! I even got this cool Samus shirt for preordering the sequel.

Personally, I'm definately going with a Wii, mainly because it'll be cheaper, and there will definately be some awesome games for it. I might not get one at launch (although it has been a long time since sitting out in a parking lot overnight waiting for a game console :D), but it'll definately be on my list. As for the others, I'll probably just wait until more games that I want to play come out on it. Hell, I didn't get a PS2 until Guitar Hero came out.

As was said earlier, to me, graphics power and that doesn't really matter to me unless the game itself is fun. However, if a really fun game comes out for all the major systems, I'll probably buy the one that looks the best on the different machines, or in the case of Soul Calibur II, the one that has the best bonus features (fighting as Link FTW).

Actually, you know the one damn thing I want from the next gen?

No more damned load screens.
Tone back on the graphics, ok, but for the love of little green apples, no more loading.

Anyone play Morowind?
Yeah, beautiful game, but in this day and age, it shouldn't need a loading screen every damn ten feet!

No more, I say!

If anything, load times are going to get worse. Blu-Ray is a new tech and it is going to take a good chunk of time to master streaming for it. Of course, if you use a large enough hard drive or cache, you could stream to that before loading to the screen... that would cut load times by quite a bit.

Or they could just make all games with 8 or 16 bit graphics, and make them really involving, you know, before they had pretty eye candy to lure us to games with sucky gameplay.

I for one am totally AGAINST EYE... oooo, shiney!

NO!! It's my shiney!! ::runs away laughing::

I agree with everyone. Loading times suck and I get distracted pretty easily, so it's a fast way to make me lose interest in the game.

That and games with long prologues!! OMFG Kingdom Hearts II did NOT need a freakin 3 hour long prologue as Roxas. ::slams head against wall::

Oh, I -will- be camping for my Wii. I got the Samus shirt too. All hail Samus.

So I bet you are thrilled that Solid Snake is in Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

You think that's bad? Did you ever play Dragon Quest VII? I loved the game, but it got off to such a slooooooow start, and you didn't get into your first battle for like 3 hours. At least you controlled characters during it, but still, it got boring.

I admit, I got bored of that game. I relented into watching one of my roomies play it from time to time.
