Good enough.
Whenever you're in over your head, just say 'But what about the quantum string theory?'

And then smack them in the head with a two by four.

Ooo... good tip. And I regularly carry a two by four in my purse. You don't need a permit for that.

Well scifi is easier, I'm more into Star Wars than Star Trek but I was into TNG back in the day... though Dark City and Total Recall are two of my favorite movies.

Books? Well hell, that's a lot to talk about. Let's just combine scifi and books and talk about Hitchhiker's Guide.

Yes, Science fiction is pretty easy. Just get started, and a few days later, when you've hit some of the high points, you notice that (for some unaccountable reason) most everyone has gone. :) hmmm....oh, well.

Enjoyed seeing the various words getting tossed about, some really nice ones got mentioned. They are just "fun", aren't they?

One of my personal favorites was from a incident in childhood. I remember my dad commenting on the irony of the word "antisesquipedalianist". Since a sesquipedalianist was someone who liked big words, an antisesquipedalianist was a giant word describing people who didn't like giant words. :) I've been amused over that one ever since.

I know how that goes...

By the time you just get to the good part about, say phishing attacks everyone is /running/ away....

and damn it! I HATE it with a passion when people EXPECT you to fix their computer....

don't get me wrong I don't mind helping out if the time is appreciated (and often times if the time is appreciated I'll donate my time...)

TIme to go back to my bag of choclate covered coffee beans now....

Hitchhiker's Guide is fanTAStic!!! Didn't see the movie... didn't want to ruin it!

That's a phenomenal word! I'm sitting at my computer trying to sound it out... and I think I'm close, but a phonetic spelling would be appreciated. Because I am going to go to work and call them all antisesquipedalianists.

The movie was horrible.
Sure, it had funny moments, but it wasn't HG...

I like the movie better than I liked the first two books (which I didn't like enough to read the rest of the series). The videogame, starship titanic, definitely sucked though.

If you liked the Hitchhiker stuff you should try Codgerspace, it's the same kind of humor.

The phobia of long/big words is also the largest word in the phobia dictionary, if I'm not absolutely mistaken. I can't recall what it is at the moment and don't feel like looking it up, I'm lazy today :p

I believe you're talking abut hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. ;)

Also, any geeks in the DFW area speak up and be known. I'll be moving out that direction soon and I'd love to meet some of my own.

Thanks :)

Good luck finding nerds in Texas :p

hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - As was pointed out earlier, Now THERE'S a word!

And, as a side note, I AM in fact located in the DFW area. Welcome! I think you'll like the area. (But, as a native, I suppose it's just vaguely possible I might be biased...hmmm.....nah).

Since people were mentioning words again (still), I thought I'd toss a couple I enjoy into the mix.

One is rowdydowdy.

Link if you're interested.

The other is flibbertigibbet.

Ditto.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=flibbertigibbet.

They're just fun! Especially if you call someone a rowdydowdy flibbertigibbet!

Watch them try to work out if they've been complimented, insulted, or just told that their fly is open. :)

Awww... what' s wrong with fixing computers? It's kinda like a puzzle, or playing a game, you get to learn a new language, figure out what works and what doesn't what PC card will work and what doesn't what means scuzzy, program in different languages, fortran, CCt, Dos, Mac, .... I got a high learning to fix mine. Then when you don't suspect anything, windoze makes it crash and you have to start all over again....   Game over dude, GAME OVER!

I ain't got no problem fixing computers!

I actually enjoy it!

but I hate it when someone expects you to fix their computer beacuse you're a "nerd" as one of my parents friends put it once... (notice that they got no geeky computer love....)

but on the other hand if someone is having troubles (even simple troubles like say simple spyware) and they ask politely for a hand...I'll give it to them. And I'll especially help if they want to learn how to fix it next time...

(No I'm not a saint and Idon't pretend to be...I just HATE people that expect you to dix their computer, What is their reasoning? BEACAUSE YOU CAN!)

anyone else know how I feel/can relate?

The movie's not bad. It gets better when you quit thinking about it in terms of how closely it follows the book. It doesn't replicate the novel exactly but keeps the general spirit up.

No, they shouldn't take advantage of you like that.... ask them to say please or they're outta here. This computer place I took mine too refused to work on mine... i was ticked, but it did make me learn to take mine out. So, I forgive them, cos now it's a blast! :rose:

For everyone, I've got the ultimate geek question...

"Joel...or Mike?"

- Cheers,

faulty

I wish I've read this post sooner...lol...bloody real life getting in the way of my fantasy time!

When I saw the movie, it didn't seem to follow the same humor vein...
I don't care so much about following the plot too closely, because then the first book alone would be an epic trilogy, but the movie seemed to lack the deadpan-witty humor of Douglas Adams.

:D They did keep the falling whale/bowl of petunias though.
Points for that.

'...Oh, not again.'

I used to help people with their computers for a living. That job sucked. We had way too many people calling in that were way to angry because they got spyware from going to porno sites other than our beloved Literotica :)

The humor is what makes it so good... I may see the movie, but only when it comes out on HBO....

I agree, computer support is the worst job ever. Luckily when I did it it was before spyware, but it was also before good virus scanners.

I don't miss that job at all.
