I'm blowing this popsicle stand and heading to Sydney next week, with maybe a few days in Melbourne. I'm staying in Darling Harbour, and will have easy access to Bondi Beach through a friend.

This is my first trip to Australia, so I'd love to get recommendations and suggestions on things to see, places to eat...what's the best fun to be had in the land down under?

Any Aussie slang that would be good to know?

I have no idea really(sorry) but enjoy the trip!!!

Jeanne: Can thoroughly recommend spending as much time as you like in Darling Harbour itself. Go to the aquarium there and also go to the outdoors market thingy that's around the dockside; loads to do.

One thing which I insist you must go and see is the Chinese Gardens. Worth every mile to go and see them. Such perfect tranquility; a haven of perfectly arranged beauty, a sanctuary of silence in the middle of one of the largest cities in the world. I could've spent hours there.

If you have time to make the trip, I could wax lyrical about Cairns too.

If you need more info or advice, then drop me a PM.

i could see you doing that...

I'm still exploring the image of her, blowing this popsicle stand here...

Sydney is supposed to rock nearly as much as Wellington. Have a good trip, keep your eyes and ears open.

Visited there myself almost ten years ago. Australians are the nicest people, I think, in the world.

Be sure to tour "The Rocks" section of Sydney. It is where the initial landings were made when the "First Fleet" arrived. I had a drink in "Fortune of War", the first pub in Australia (you better like drinking beer if you are going there).

If you get to Canberra, I'd strongly suggest visiting their War Memorial. Australians have fought vallantly in several wars and usually on behalf of other nations.

And beaches, you must visit Australia's beaches.

I envy you. Have fun!

EL and RG and Blackie - thank you! I think this trip is just what the doctor ordered. I'm going with a friend I grew up with - she's like a wilder, crazier sister and I suspect she will drag me into some madness and mayhem. Those Aussie boys better hold on to their hats.

TheEarl - Darling Harbour sounds like it'll be a good home base. I'll definitely put the Chinese Gardens on my list - peace, serenity and gardens are totally up my alley. I'm thinking I need to see some kangaroos and koala and maybe a waterfall or two, so I'm looking into day tours outside of the city - anything you could recommend like that?

vella - *snicker*

cant - *snicker*
Actually, I've no idea where I picked up that expression...back in college maybe? I always pictured someone roaring away on a motorcycle, leaving the popsicle stand in the dust...but I think you've got something else in mind. ;)

Ted-E-Bare - K, the Rocks, and a drinking establishment, excellent. I hear they like their beer. And yes, the Aussies do go out and fight for their friends. Wonder if that has anything to do with all the beer drinking?

I have heard they're real friendly down under...

Herecomes is from New Zealand, which rocks big. But I hear there's a lot of friendly to go around in Oz as well.

I looked into adding NZ to the trip, but couldn't quite get all the logistics to work this time. Gorgeous place, though. Will have to find a way to get there one of these days. It's on the list.

I'm so jealous, LadyJ! :( I want to go somewhere new and fun and exciting, too! *sniff* I will try to be happy for you in my greenness… (Just kidding, I'm very happy for you!)

I understand the surfing is good on the south end of Bondi, if you're interested. You missed the nude surfing competition (held in January) but you can still sunbath topless, if you are so inclined. (Please don't forget to take pictures. )

And just a little FYI, but did you know Bondi is named after an aboriginal word meaning "the sound of waves breaking over rocks"? I love names like that.

Have fun and be safe! I think that only seven of the ten most deadly animals live in Oz, so you should be fine. :D

Much Luck,

Yui

Have a fun and safe trip :rose:

As for recommendations....I have not a clue. I'd ask Wishfulthinking or Shadowskill they are both Aussies. Shadow was around here someplace...maybe I can send him to this thread.

Enjoy yourself :D

Did all the other Aussies vanish? Being a Queenslander I'm not much help to you with regards to things to do in Sydney and Melbourne but as far as slang goes you'll be fine, though trust me on this.... skip the g'day and just say Hi. Your trip will be great, the weather will be great and the people will be great.... what more could a girl want? Just a thought, if you're interested in knowing what the weather is likely to be google sydney weather forecast, there's heaps of detailed sites that will let you know what to expect. If you want a few local recommendations of things to do or see, pop into the longtime Aussies Thread in the playground and ask, half of the regulars are from Sydney so you'll be bound to get some good ideas from some nice people.

Have a fantastic time!

The Aussie thread is a good place to get advice. I guess my fellow Aussies aren't around at the moment.

Can't help with Melbourne but Sydney...I have a few suggestions. The place one must see in Sydney is the Opera House, its walking distance from Darling Harbour. You will find all kinds of performances, from theater to classical music, ballet, film, and of course the seasonal opera performances. They also offer guided tours also.
If you like quite peaceful walks, I would recommend the Royal Botanic Gardens. There is actually a sign that says, "Please walk on the grass" The gardens have everything you might expect and more.

Bondi Beach has beautiful white sands and is full of people who are not shy about going topless ;) . Bondi also has attractions that include ice-cream parlors, outdoor cafes, greasy fish and chip restaurants, surf stores, and touristy shops.

Well, hope this helps. Have a wonderful trip.

Shadow :rose:

I've never been LadyJ but I hope you have a fantabulous time!

Thank you, Yui! I'll try to stay away from the world's most poisonous snakes and I'm disappointed that I missed the nude surfing competition. Was the competition on the surfing or the nudes?

Now that I know what Bondi means, I'm looking forward to it even more. I like the sound of waves breaking over rocks. I could use a little peace these days.

If I could take you with me, you know I would!!

Lol! I have a friend who grew up in Canberra, and he says the same thing - if you're not Australian, you can't use the slang unless you want people to roar with laughter! I don't see myself being able to say any of it with a straight face anyway. Thanks for the thread link!

Thanks, sweets. The Opera House is definitely on my list, and thank you so much for the Botanic Gardens suggestion. I love that kind of thing, and spend all kinds of time at the SF Botanic Gardens in Golden Gate Park where they have an entire section on ANZ flora that flourishes in our climate as well. Can't wait to see the natural habitat!

Moonlight Elf - thanks for sending Shadowskill to this thread!
