This is an observation, NOT a criticism. Something new has arisen on this board over the past six months. I don’t know exactly what to call it, but I’m sure everyone has noticed.
I’m referring to threads that are “owned” or maintained by someone for a long time. These are the threads that would die immediately were it not for the posts of a single Lit’ster. I don’t have to list these threads, there are several running right now, and I’m not saying there is ANYTHING wrong with them.
As recently as last year, I remember discussions of thread “etiquette” that condemned people for bumping their own threads repeatedly. In those discussions, praise was given to thread starters who maintained their threads and acknowledged those who posted to their thread; but not to people that “self-promoted” their own threads beyond the thread’s normal life span.
I’m not talking about the so-called “never ending” threads. Those threads are used by many people, to pass a little time, or to push up their post counts (another foolish idea, IMO). On some of these “owned” threads, a single poster is responsible for around half the total posts in the thread. These threads become kind of a mini-BB within the larger board, where one person keeps the thread going.
I’m starting this thread because I wonder if the so-called “rules” of Lit etiquette have changed? I personally don’t see anything wrong with the “owned” threads. Some of them, like the “blurt it out” thread, have taken on their own life, and don’t need anyone to “bump” them up. Since I’m not a very “cliquish” person, and the “owned” threads seem to become cliques, I realize that I don’t have a very broad perspective on the subject. That’s the reason I’m asking for the opinions of others. Maybe, this has existed for a long time, and somehow, I've managed to overlook these threads until recently. If so, I'm sure someone will let me know. …….. (thanks in advance).
