This is an observation, NOT a criticism. Something new has arisen on this board over the past six months. I don’t know exactly what to call it, but I’m sure everyone has noticed.

I’m referring to threads that are “owned” or maintained by someone for a long time. These are the threads that would die immediately were it not for the posts of a single Lit’ster. I don’t have to list these threads, there are several running right now, and I’m not saying there is ANYTHING wrong with them.

As recently as last year, I remember discussions of thread “etiquette” that condemned people for bumping their own threads repeatedly. In those discussions, praise was given to thread starters who maintained their threads and acknowledged those who posted to their thread; but not to people that “self-promoted” their own threads beyond the thread’s normal life span.

I’m not talking about the so-called “never ending” threads. Those threads are used by many people, to pass a little time, or to push up their post counts (another foolish idea, IMO). On some of these “owned” threads, a single poster is responsible for around half the total posts in the thread. These threads become kind of a mini-BB within the larger board, where one person keeps the thread going.

I’m starting this thread because I wonder if the so-called “rules” of Lit etiquette have changed? I personally don’t see anything wrong with the “owned” threads. Some of them, like the “blurt it out” thread, have taken on their own life, and don’t need anyone to “bump” them up. Since I’m not a very “cliquish” person, and the “owned” threads seem to become cliques, I realize that I don’t have a very broad perspective on the subject. That’s the reason I’m asking for the opinions of others. Maybe, this has existed for a long time, and somehow, I've managed to overlook these threads until recently. If so, I'm sure someone will let me know. …….. (thanks in advance).

I'm going to "ban" you now.

Kidding, of course.

I know what you mean, but either there are very few of those around...or I just don't bother opening the ones that exist.

I generally keep the "People who should be banned" thread bumped, but I don't think I've ever gone so far as to bump it when I was the last to post - at least... not unless I was really bored. :D

Outside of that thread, I generally just screw around in the short-lived threads during the time I can be on Lit.

I thought about this recently.
If I start a thread, and keep it going and someone 'butts' in and posts their stuff, should I say something?
I decided it was petty. I don't 'own' a thread and if someone wants to contribute then that is of benefit to us all. :)
Just my opinion.

I'm sitting here wondering how long I should wait before I acknowledge those who have posted on this thread.

I don't want to be guilty of bumping my own thread.

I suppose it doesn't really matter to me how other's deal with the threads they start. I just don't read what doesn't interest me.

On the other hand, there are very few topical threads that can be kicked around for more than a few days. Frankly, if I have started a thread I visit it, respond as appropriate and try to keep the discussion rolling as long as it is interesting. When I have nothing new to add, I don't post.

*smirks*

The average life expectancy for one of my threads on the GB is six hours!

:p

I generally don't read really long threads. What happens is, I find something interesting to respond to early on, but by the time I get to the end it's not relevant anymore. For example, that's more or less what happened in this thread... and it's only got seven posts in it.

Dammit. Now it's got like fourteen or something.

Sue me. I'm a slow typist.

okay to acknowledge postings.......

but it goes into ridiculous when the thread keeps getting bumped* up day after day after day.

that is the litmus test,,,,,,,,,so post away Texan.

I appreciate your permission, Siren.... ;)

I keep waiting for people to post in defense of the "owned" threads. Some of those threads have over a thousand posts. I'm thinking of a couple of threads that have over 600 posts from a single person. If this is the case, there should be people who really like those threads.

I'm sorry, but I don't see any of this as an "issue". I could care less how long a thread is, or how many times someone posts in it. We all have the rght to post, and we share this right equally.
But, having been ignored repeatedly when I address someone or a topic, I assure you, when someone takes the time and effort to address me, I am damn sure going to address them back. :) I really don't care how long it makes a thread, it's what I think is right, it's important to me, and I will do so.

They must be boring so that I haven't opened or posted to them. I can't think of a single thread I know about that fits this description. But then, I stay away from the never ending threads, too.

They never open these threads. They usually open threads in the playground. I know a couple of those owned threads were maintained by a certain GB persona non grata who spends the majority of time at the Playground with a few owned threads.

It's not a generally a GB phenomena, but we do have the weeds.

I say we try the whole "point and laugh" technique.

I always thought the GB was a place of "ideas," more than personalities.

Owned threads are cliques based upon one person's personality. There were several of this type of thread on the first page, at the time I started typing this. During the day shift, there will be many more threads of that type.

I agree with KM, those threads are much more common at the Playground. I don't remember those thread types being here six months ago. I see it as an evolution of the GB. It's not an evolution I like, but what I like shouldn't matter anyway. I just wondered what others thought.

i don't think i'm very impressed with you at all.

can't you think of something better to contribute?
